Brazil Winter Junior and Senior Championships moved on to day 2 Thursday, with athletes continuing to rewrite the meet record books.
Teenager Natalia de Luccas was especially impressive, putting up the fastest 200 back time of any swimmer from the Junior-2 division, with a 2:15.19 that was over four seconds faster than the senior winner.
The junior swimmers are divided into two categories, Junior-1 (born in 1997, rougly 17 & under) and Junior-2 (born in 1995 and 1996 roughly 18-19).
Giovanna Diamante picked up a pair of wins in the Junior-2 field, breaking a pair of meet records. She won the 200 free in 2:01.16 and the 100 fly with a 1:00.24.
Four senior meet records went down on the day. Larissa Oliveira got one in the first event, the 200 free. Oliveira went 2:00.11 for that win.
Both 400 IM races saw championships records. Julia Gerotto went 4:55.88 to win the women’s race, her second win after taking the 800 free last night. For the men, Miguel Leite Valente won in 4:23.17 to complement his 1500 free win from night 1.
Henrique Martins broke the 100 fly championship record, going 53.06 to claim the race for Minas.
Leonardo de Deus didn’t break a record but his 200 backstroke was a strong win. The Corinthians swimmer went 1:58.51.
Last night’s 50 fly winner Daynara de Paula added another win, claiming the 100 fly in 58.77.
Other senior winners were Giuliano Rocco in the men’s 200 free (1:50.50) and Thalandra Borges in the women’s 200 back (2:19.29).
A total of 10 individual junior Championship records went down. In addition to Diamante’s two listed above, here are the other meet record-breaking swims:
- Carolina Bilich, 200 free Junior-2, 2:01.99
- Nathan Bighetti, 200 back Junior-1, 2:03.01
- Vinicius Lanza, 100 fly Junior-1, 54.13
- Pedro Vieira, 100 fly Junior-2, 53.31
- Bruna Primati, 400 IM Junior-1, 4:55.71
- Nathalia Almeida, 400 IM Junior-2, 4:53.86
- Brandon Almeida, 400 IM Junior-1, 4:23.67
- Icaro Pereira, 400 IM Junior-2, 4:28.57
Those were the second wins of the meet, and the second meet records, for both Bilich and Brandon Almeida.
All 6 of the possible championship records went down in the 4×100 free relay.
SESI won the women’s senior relay in 3:44.83, breaking the meet mark. SESI also won the Junior-1 relay in 3:51.39, while Pinheiros took the Junior-2 event in 3:49.90.
Minas won the men’s senior relay with a 3:20.38. That was a record, and both junior teams broke their respective marks as well – Pinheiros won Junior-1 (3:25.69) and Corinthians won the Junior-2 title (3:24.48).
