Germany Sending 35 to Debrecen for Euros

Germany has announced their roster of 35 for the 2012 European Championships that begin in Debrecen, Hungary on Monday. This roster includes the 18 or so swimmers who met the German Olympic qualifying standard at last week’s National Championships, along with another group of athletes who the federation considers to be on the verge of qualifying. Those unqualified will be given one final chance to grab any unclaimed spots at this meet.

The biggest eyes will be on what has been the story of the past few weeks – the health of Hendrik Feldwehr. He is on the roster, and will have a chance to earn a spot on the Olympic roster in the 100 breaststroker. His status as the breaststroker on Germany’s medley relay is in jeopardy, as an injury to his leg kept him out of last week’s trials. As of now, the top candidate is the 1:00.89 from Christian Vom Lehn with a 1:00.89 from trials. Nobody has hit the qualifying standard yet for an individual swim though – that time will be a 1:00.44.

The third breaststroker shooting for that target is Marco Koch; the swimmer who won’t get a chance, however, is Johannes Neumann, who tied with Koch at a 1:00.92 at Trials. Martin Grodzki, the double NCAA Champion, also isn’t going to have a last spot at Olympic qualification – though it was still a long shot as he was far from the German standards. It’s not clear if this was per his choice or the federations.
