Swim coach Jeff DeMott of the Y-Rapids/Quad-A swimming team at the Albany Area YMCA in Georgia has been officially added to USA Swimming’s banned list.

DeMott’s name was added to the USA Swimming list of individuals permanently suspended or ineligible on January 6th.

There hasn’t been any news coverage of incidents involving DeMott, but USA Swimming lists the sections of its Code of Conduct under which DeMott was suspended.

The statutes are 304.3.4, 304.3.8, 304.3.19, 305.1, and 305.2, and you can read the official language by following each individual link.

Most specific is 305.2, which prohibits “Any rubdown or massage performed on an athlete.” 305.1 speaks to “inappropriate touching,” and 304.3.8 prohibits “inappropriate sexual conduct.”

The other two statutes are more general. 304.3.19 deals with any conduct “detrimental to the image or reputation of USA Swimming,” and 304.3.4 deals with violations of USA Swimming’s Athlete Protection Policies.

DeMott had been coaching the club for 15 years, and was the recipient of the American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA) Award of Excellence in 1998.

I have known Jeff Demott since the late 90’s and can say he is eteremly ethical, respectful, and has the athlete’s best interest in mind. I personally do not believe the allegations against him. Having swam for him directly, I only know him in the most positive light. He has helped elevated my career ten fold. The work ethic and preserverence he has helped instilled upon me, has taken me to the collegiate and international level. I am forever endeared to him.

Doesn’t supprise me at all. Both brothers of quad A are a joke. They are in it for themselves only. Tim , Jeffs brother through away a AAA swimmer, having an affair with her mother. Nothing but lies, and deception. Everything was at their convenience. Dig deeper, you’ll find a lot more.

Jeff was my coach, i wasn’t as surprised as some were about this. It’s a terrible thing, and he still faces charges ahead of him. It’s a sad thing to happen.

Interestingly, here is an op-ed from him in 2010 downplaying media coverage of sexual abuse in swimming:
