Georgia Tech Reels in Brazilian Breast/IMer Caio Pumputis

Caio Pumputis of Sao Paolo, Brazil has committed to swim for Georgia Tech beginning next fall. “I chose Georgia Tech because it offers me an excellent structure, this will help me to develop my talent in swimming and in academic. Choosing an university is very hard because it’s a decision for your whole life. The staff made me fell at home, I’m very happy with my choice and I can’t wait to follow my dreams with this big family.” [sic]

Pumputis is a strong breaststroker and IMer out of Club Pinheiros, who has already represented Brazil on the international stage. He competed at the 5th FINA World Junior Swimming Championships in Singapore in August of 2015, swimming in the 100m breast (22nd), 200m breast (15th), 200 IM (12th), and 400m IM (23rd). Closer to home, he dominated the competition at the 17th Trophy Ronaldo Passos last November, winning all four of his events, taking down the championship record in the 200 IM in the process, and earning Swimmer of the Meet honors.

“I started to swim at Club Juventus and as the years passed by I improved a lot my times and then my parents and I decided that I should move to a stronger Club Pinheiros because it offers to me an excellent structure to develop my talent. I’d  like to represent Brazil in olympic games 2020 and Georgia Tech can make this dream come true.” [sic]

His best times, converted to SCY:

200 breast 2:16.40 1:59.27

Pumputis would have been the Yellow Jackets’ fastest 400 IMer last year, and would have placed top-5 in the 100/200 breast and 200 IM. Should he focus on freestyle he will be a contender for a spot on the GT 800 free relay, at a minimum. Georgia Tech finished fifth in the men’s standings at the 2016 ACC Championships. Pumputis would have added to the Jackets’ tally in the 100 breast (C final), 200 breast (B final), and 400 IM (C final).
