Georgia Hangs NCAA Championship Banner in Gabrielsen Natatorium

The Georgia Bulldogs women’s swimming & diving team hung their 5th NCAA Championship banner this week, as shown above in this photo Tweeted by first-year assistant Stefanie Williams.

Though this is her first season as an assistant, Williams was a part of the 1999, 2000, and 2001 seasons, before spending some time away as an assistant at Ohio State. As a swimmer, Williams scored the maximum number of 28 All-American honors (7 honors x 4 seasons).

Though the Cal women were two-time defending champs, Georgia won by a relatively-comfortable margin of 84 points (477-393), with the meet largely out of contention headed into the final day.

Among the individual national champions for the Bulldogs on their title run included Allison Schmitt in the 200 free individually, and both the 400 and 800 free relays.

The Georgia women have a tall order trying to repeat, after they graduate 100 individual points and 8 very crucial relay spots, but they do return one of their Olympians (Shannon Vreeland), and several other talents (Amber McDermott, Brittany MacLean), so they’ll still be hanging around the top of the standings.

Probably both. They generally have a good mix of top guns and depth. Their depth in the freestyles last year was insane

I am very curious to hear the collective opinion of swimswam readers re Georgias success
is their success a result of their ability to recruit great talent and focus it or the ability to train talent to greatness?
