Georgia Bulldogs – Kingsley, Kalisz, Acevedo – Earn SEC Honors

ATHENS, Ga. — Three members of the Georgia swimming team have earned Southeastern Conference weekly honors, according to an announcement Tuesday by the league office.

Megan Kingsley and Chase Kalisz were chosen as the SEC Female and Male Swimmer of the Week, respectively, while Javier Acevedo was picked as the SEC Male Freshman of the Week.

Kingsley, a junior from Mount Pleasant, S.C., led the way as the Lady Bulldogs opened the season with a win at North Carolina on Friday. She took first place in the 100 butterfly (53.07), the 200 butterfly (1:54.90) and the 200 individual medley (1:59.11). All three of her individual times currently rank first nationally. Kingsley also helped the 200 medley relay touch first in 1:40.13. Behind Kingsley, Georgia won its season opener for the 15th straight season and improved to 23-0 all-time against North Carolina under Coach Jack Bauerle.

Kalisz, a senior from Bel Air, Md., returned to the Georgia lineup after taking 2015-16 off from collegiate competition to train for the Olympics. He helped the Bulldogs dispatch the Tar Heels as he won the 200 freestyle (1:36.60) and the 200 breaststroke (1:56.08). Kalisz ranks first nationally in the 200 breaststroke and third in the 200 freestyle. Kalisz also was part of the runner-up 400 freestyle relay (3:04.43).

Acevedo, a freshman from Scarborough, Ontario, won two individual events in his collegiate debut. An Olympian for Canada, Acevedo won the 100 backstroke in a national-best 47.74. He also touched the wall first in the 100 freestyle (45.11). Acevedo was on the 200 medley relay (1:30.58) that took first and he came in second in the 200 individual medley (1:50.34).

Georgia will return to action Oct. 28 at Gabrielsen Natatorium when it entertains Florida at 11 a.m.
