Freshman Gunner Grant stood out for the Harvard Crimson as the men and women defeated Ivy League rival brown last weekend. Grant won all 3 of his individual events. Grant swept the backstrokes with a 48.27 in the 100 back and a 1:45.01 in the 200 back. He dominated his final event, the 200 IM, in 1:48.87 over teammate Daniel Chang (1:51.12).

Umit Gures also won multiple individual races. Gures first won the 50 free, hitting the wall in 20.53 ahead of teammates Joon Sung (20.79) and Ryan Linnihan (20.80). He then dominated the 100 fly in 47.98.

The women saw Kennedy Quist and Jaycee Yegher win two individual races. Quist out-touched Brown’s Taylor Seaman, 23.65 to 23.89, in the 50 free. She also came from behind to run down teammate Samantha Shelton (1:49.48) in the 200 free, winning in 1:49.21. Yegher swept the breaststrokes with a 1:02.91 in the 100 and a 2:13.48 in the 200.

PRESS RELEASE – HARVARD MEN

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard men’s swimming and diving (5-2, 4-0 Ivy) returned to Blodgett and secured a convincing 203.5-96.5 win over Brown (2-4, 1-4 Ivy) in a mid-week meet on Wednesday afternoon.

The Crimson set the tone early in the 200-yard medley relay. Harvard’s A squad of Gunner Grant, Daniel ChangMichael Zarian, and Umit Gures secured first place, edging out Brown’s quartet by.76 seconds.

First-year Gunner Grant was one of the Crimson’s top performers with a three first-place finishes in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke as well as 200 IM. Grant swam away from the rest of the field in the 200 back, clocking in with a time of 1:45.01 – four seconds head of teammate Michael Zarian, who placed second with a time of 1:49.41.

Junior Alec DeCaprio highlighted Harvard divers, posting a scores of 316.88 in the 1-meter dive and a score of 328.80 on the 3-meter to secure first place in each event. Senior Austin Fields followed up DiCaprio finishing third on the 3-meter dive with a score of 307.88, while first-year Luke Foster tallied 300.68

Harvard Highlights
– Sophomore Umit Gures edged out Brown’s Joon Sung by .26 seconds for first place in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 20.53. He also secured first place in the 100-yard butterfly, touching the wall with a time of 47.58.
– Sophomore Jake Johnson and junior Michael Zarian finished 1-2 in the 200-yard butterfly, clocking in a 1:48.15 and 1:49.57, respectively.
– Senior Daniel Chang beat out teammate Jared Simpson by .39 seconds to claim first-place in the 100-yard breaststroke.
– Harvard improves to 86-2 over Brown all-time.

PRESS RELEASE – HARVARD WOMEN

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard women’s swimming and diving (4-1, 4-0 Ivy) remained perfect in Ivy League action with a 184.5-110.5 win over Brown (3-3, 2-3 Ivy) on Wednesday afternoon.

The Crimson set the tone of the meet early in the 200-yard medley relay.  Harvard’s B relay squad of Felicia PasadynJaycee Yegher, Miki Dalhke, and Kate Hazlett edged out the A relay team (Mei Lynn ColbyKennidy Quist, Addie Rose Bullock, Darlene Fung) by .18 seconds touching the wall with a time of 1:42.30.

Individually and competing in her first meet of the 2019-20 season, junior Jaycee Yegher posted a pair of first place finishes in the 100-yard (1:02.91) and 200-yard (2:13.48) breaststrokes. Yegher’s 200-yard time moved her into third place amongst the program’s all-time leaders.

In the diving portion of the meet, the Crimson had some solid performances. Sophomore Morgane Herculano and junior Georgina Milne finished back-to-back in 1-meter dive, turning in scores of 280.73 and 265.43, respectively. On the 3-meter board, the top four spots belonged to the Crimson, with sophomore Esther Lawrence leading the way, tallying a score of 332.25.

Harvard Highlights
– Junior Kennidy Quist squeaked out first place in the 200-yard free .27 seconds ahead of teammate Samantha Shelton, clocking in with a time of 1:49.21.
– Quist claimed first in the 50-yard freestyle, touching the wall with a time of 23.65.
– First-year Felicia Pasadyn swam way from the field in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:57.66 – five seconds ahead of the next closest swimmer.
– Harvard’s 400-yard freestyle relay A-squad (Kate HazlettKennidy QuistSamantha SheltonFelicia Pasadyn) posted a time of 3:25.62 to conclude the match.
– Harvard improves to 34-9 all-time against Brown.

PRESS RELEASE – BROWN MEN

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Brown men’s swimming & diving team was defeated by Harvard, 203.5-96.5 on Wednesday at Blodgett Pool. Senior Joon Sung (Los Angeles, Calif.) and junior Michael Lincoln (Palo Alto, Calif.) led the Bears with wins in the 100 and 200 freestyle, respectively.

“The team swam very well today after an extremely intense two week stretch of training,” said head coach Kevin Norman. “Harvard is a talented team and we showed a lot of heart with the way we raced on the road. Ending the meet with a win in the 400 free relay is a testament to how tough this team is.”

The Bears opened the meet with a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay with Sung, senior Coley Sullivan (Louisville, Ky.), sophomore I.I. Qiao (Naperville, Ill.) and senior Alex Smilenov (Katy, Texas) swimming to a time of 1:29.91.

Freshman Tyler Lu (Pleasanton, Calif.) was the top finisher in the 1000 freestyle in third with a time of 9:41.92 while sophomore Nico Ortega (Caracas, Venezuela/Westport, Conn.) (9:44.56, fourth) and freshman Kabir Randhawa (Dix Hills, N.Y.) (9:44.88, fifth) also recorded points.

A first-place finish was next turned in by Lincoln in the 200 freestyle (1:39.40) with sophomore Lucas Hess (Salt Lake City, Utah) grabbing third (1:41.15).

Senior Cody Cline (Wellington, Fla.) and Sullivan went 2-3 in the 100 backstroke with times of 50.72 and 50.97, respectively, while sophomore Billy Knaul (Sudbury, Mass.) followed in fifth (51.66). Knaul came in fourth in the 200 of the event (1:52.93) with junior Alex Park (Dix Hills, N.Y.) following (1:54.14, fifth).

Sophomore Ben Hayes (River Hills, Wis.) finished third in both the 100 backstroke (57.27) and the 200 IM (1:52.64) while sophomore Reid Arwood (Asheville, N.C.) took fifth (58.74) in the 100 backstroke.

Qiao led the Bears in the 200 butterfly in third place (1:51.60) as freshman Vincent Huang (League City, Texas) (1:51.41, fourth) and freshman Lukas Scheidl (Mendham, N.J.) (1:52.44, fifth) trailed. Qiao later took third again in the 100 of the event in 49.54.

Sung earned second place in the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.79 and came back later to take first in the 100 freestyle (45.37), tying with Harvard’s Mahlon Reihman. Cline came in third in the 100 freestyle (45.56) while Smilenov claimed fourth in the 50 freestyle (20.96).

Diving saw senior William McNelis (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) earn a second-place finish in the 1M with a score of 278.33 and sophomore Trevor Labuda (Los Altos, Calif.) coming in fourth (258.98). In the 3M it was Labuda who took second (326.55) while McNelis took fifth (292.65).

Huang led Brown in the 200 breaststroke in third with a time of 2:05.26 with senior Toshiki Takahashi (Tokyo, Japan) taking fifth (2:07.91).

Lincoln took third in the 500 freestyle in 4:34.03 with Scheidl coming in fifth (4:35.42).

Cline, Sung, Lincoln and Smilenov closed the meet by winning the 400 freestyle relay in 2:59.87.

The Bears next host Columbia for their final home meet of the regular season and Senior Day on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 12:00 p.m.

PRESS RELEASE – BROWN WOMEN

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Brown women’s swimming & diving team was defeated by Harvard, 184.5-110.5, on Wednesday at Blodgett Pool. The Bears were led by senior Marley Cross (Seattle, Wash.) and sophomore Miku Takabayashi (Glastonbury, Conn.) who recorded victories in the 100 freestyle and 400 IM, respectively.

“It’s great to be back underway with racing for the back stretch of our season,” said head coach Kate Kovenock. “Performance-wise, momentum started to build for us about a third of the way into the meet. You want a team that will dig in and fight. We found a way to do that today against the defending league champion. With that said, being ready and tuned up right from the start will be key for Saturday’s dual.”

The 200 medley relay team of freshman Sage Matsushima (Huntington Beach, Calif.), sophomore Audrey Lukawski (San Francisco, Calif.), junior Han Nguyen (Los Gatos, Calif.) and Cross began the day with a third-place swim of 1:46.25.

Sophomore Emma Whall (Dover, N.H.) opened the individual portion with a second-place showing in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:28.70 while senior Julia Armitage (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) followed in third (10:30.06).

Freshman Audrey Orange (New York City, N.Y.) led the Bears in the 200 freestyle, touching the wall in third (1:51.59) while Takabayashi grabbed fifth (1:52.80).

Senior Sarah Welch (Beverly, Mass.) and Matsushima went 3-4 in the 100 backstroke with times of 57.64 and 57.78, respectively. Welch later took second in the 200 back with a time of 2:02.10 while sophomore Victoria Gong (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) (2:09.40, fourth) and junior Deanne Umbay (North Hills, Calif.) (2:11.61, fifth) followed.

Lukawski took second in both breaststroke events with a 1:05.40 in the 100 and a 2:19.30 in the 200. Freshman Sasha Liu (Piedmont, Calif.) finish fifth in the 100 (1:07.40) while Takabayashi took fifth in the 200 (2:26.03).

Freshman Nell Chidley (Mystic, Conn.) paced the Bears in the 200 butterfly in third place (2:02.77) and sophomore Caylene Rippon (Hershey, Pa.) followed in fifth (2:06.89).

Brown took three of the top-five spots in the 50 freestyle with junior Taylor Seaman (Brighton, Mich.) leading the group in second (23.89) while junior Tory Center (Madison, Wis.) (23.97, third) and Cross (24.12, fifth) followed. The Bears had another strong showing in the 100 freestyle with Cross winning the race in 51.48 and Seaman (51.66) and Center (52.64) finishing in third and fifth, respectively.

Sophomore Liv Mitchell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) led the Bears on the 3M board with a score of 263.25 for fifth. Junior Julia Feord (Royal Oak, Mich.) also contributed points in the 3M in sixth with a mark of 233.25. Feord came back to claim third in the 1M with a score of 253.80 while Mitchell took seventh (238.73).

Orange finished second in the 500 freestyle in 4:58.69 with senior Amelia Gilchrist (Greensboro, N.C.) (5:03.96, fourth) and Chidley (5:12.29, fifth) behind her.

Nguyen and Matsushima went 2-4 in the 100 butterfly with times of 55.85 and 56.96, respectively.

Brown took the top-three spots in the 400 IM with Takabayashi winning the race in 4:26.23 and Welch (4:30.27, second) and Whall (4:30.99) rounding out the final.

Seaman, Center, Orange and Cross closed the meet by winning the 400 freestyle relay in 3:26.54.

The Bears next host Columbia for their final home meet of the regular season and Senior Day on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 12:00 p.m.
