Four swimmers set new TCU records on Friday during the second day of the Texas Invitational, all of which earned them NCAA B Marks. Six Horned Frogs finished the day with B Standard marks.
SCHOOL RECORDS
Three women’s school records fell, starting with Micaela Roemer in the 100 fly. In the preliminary round, Roemer swam for a 53.96 mark, the first sub-54 second 100 fly mark in school history. Senior Devin Newton broke her own school record in the 100 breast, finishing in 1:01.72. Maddie Ibrahim broke her own school record in the 100 back with a preliminary mark of 54.26. She proceeded to break her own record again in the final round, finishing in 54.09.
On the men’s side, freshman Joao Andrade set a new school record in the 200 free, finishing in 1:37.35. The previous record was 1:37.59.
READY WHEN IT COUNTS
In addition to the four school record holders, two more Horned Frogs earned NCAA B Standards. Dayne Odendaal and Migs Martin both earned spots in the finals of their respective events and earned B cuts in the finals. In the 400 IM, Odendaal went from a preliminary mark of 3:56.02 to a final mark of 3:53.52. Martin, in the 100 breast, went from 55.96 to 55.15.
ADDITIONAL FINALISTS
Ten other Horned Frogs earned spots in the finals as well. For the women, Kiki Rice and Victoria Barczyk qualified in the 400 IM, Chloe Miller and Lauren Halliburton in the 100 breast, and Elise Forzley, Ruby Powell, and Amanda Key in the 100 back. For the men, Carlos Hunnicutt and Heyward Brown reached the 400 IM finals and Jakub Swierczynski qualified for the 100 breast.
COACH’S THOUGHTS
“It was our best day so far,” head coach Sam Busch said. “Micaela is just tapping into her potential. She’s an elite underwater kicker. We’ve been working on that all year, keeping her underwater, and focusing on her strength. I was impressed with the way Devin bounced back from her 200 IM yesterday to break her own record today. She didn’t let one race dictate her whole meet and that’s impressive. Maddie is someone who works so hard. She’s pretty tough on herself so it’s great to see her to reap the benefits of her hard work. Joao is two for two for school records. He’s set to have a good day on Saturday.”
“I think day three is our best day. Everyone is tired at the end of the meet, so it’s a matter of showing up and racing a polished race. We just have to trust the training and finish strong. I think we can do that.”
