Former Big 12 Champion Fonua Nominated for “100 Most Eligible Bachelors” By Out Magazine

Former Big 12 Champion, and 2012 Olympian, Amini Fonua has been nominated by Out Magazine as one of their fourth annual list of 100 most eligible bachelors.

Fonua is a native of New Zealand, and his father is from Tonga (the country that he represented at the 2012 Olympics). In 2012, during his senior season, he was the Big 12 Champion in the 100 yard breaststroke, and he was Tonga’s flag bearer for the opening ceremony in London.

Fonua has also dedicated much of his time to enhancing water safety and skill in his adopted home of Tonga, where despite (or perhaps because) of being an island nation, the drowning rate is extremely high.

Since graduating from Texas A&M, Fonua has moved to New York City to pursue a career in television production.

Out magazine has a circulation of 203,000 and has been in production since 1992. It focuses on issues and personalities popular within the gay and lesbian fashion, entertainment, and lifestyle industries, and has a higher circulation than any other gay monthly publication in the United States, according to communications firm Cision Navigator.

Fonua currently has received .15% of the vote, which ties him for 60th out of 100 nominees. He falls ahead of celebrities like former NBA player Jason Collins, Glee star Alex Newell, but falls behind Australian diver Matthew Mitcham (.26% of the vote) among aquatic athletes.

Musician Adam Lambert is currently with a runaway lead in the vote.
