Florida State Breaks Ahead On Day 2 to Top Quad Meet at FGCU

Following day 1, FSU and FGCU were tied on the women’s side, with the meet to be decided on Saturday. The Noles broke through to lead the quad, taking wins over FGCU, West Florida, and Florida Southern. FGCU also picked up a pair of victories with wins over UWF and Florida Southern.

Florida State’s Tayla Lovemore had one of the most impressive swims of the session, swimming to victory in the women’s 100 fly. Lovemore dipped under the 50 second barrier to win the race, splitting 25.71 at the halfway point on the way to her final time of 54.78.

After swimming a personal best in the 200 free yesterday, Lydia Ware picked up an individual title for the Noles on day 2. Ware went head-to-head with FGCU sprint duo Katie Latham and Hannah Burdge, with all 3 swimmers finishing in the 50-point range. Ware got her hand on the wall 1st, winning in 50.65 ahead of Burdge (50.71) and Latham (50.83).

Florida Gulf Coast senior Sandra Wilk represented the Eagles with a win in the 100 back. Wilk led the race from start to finish, getting to the wall in 55.89 to outpace FSU’s Ariel Barber (56.67).

UWF’s Theresa Michalak picked up a victory for her team in the 200 IM, an event in which she was the 2015 SEC Champion before transferring to West Florida. Michalak was the only swimmer to break 2 minutes, caliming victory in 1:59.53 ahead of FSU’s Ware (2:03.95). She then went on to complete a successful double, winning her 3rd event of the weekend with a 1:00.62 in the 100 breast.

The Florida State and Florida Southern men traveled to Fort Myers, Florida for a 2-day dual meet on Friday November 4th, through Saturday November 5th. The FSU men led by a large margin through day 1, and extended their lead to seal their team victory on day 2.

ACC Championship finalists Connor Kalisz and Jason Coombs left their mark for FSU with individual wins on day 2. Coombs, an honorable mention All-American, won his signature 100 breast with a 55.66 to outswim teammate Matt Ankerholz (55.96). Kalisz was the 200 IM champ, racing to the wall in 1:54.85 ahead of Florida Southern’s Matthew Holmes (1:55.37).

After winning yesterday’s 500 free, FSU’s Calvin Bryant completed his sweep of the distance freestyles for the Noles. This time, Bryant was the 1000 free champ, blasting a 9:27.85 to finish well over 20 seconds ahead of anyone else.

Sprint standout Jason McCormick dipped under 45 to win the 100 free for the Noles, clocking a speedy 44.68 to win the race. Behind him, teammates Emir Muratovic (45.04) and Kanoa Kaleoaloha (46.05) completed the sweep for FSU. Kaleoaloha won the 200 free and 100 fly earlier in the meet with times of 1:38 and 49.69 in those events respectively.
