Florida International Adds Spaniard Berta Triola to Roster

Florida International University announced the addition of freestyler Berta Triola from Spain to their program starting in the fall.

Triola is from Mataro, Spain, and she has pretty impressive range from the 50 through the mile.

Triola’s Top Times (SCM/SCY converted)

  • 50 free 26.91/24.24
  • 100 free 56.94/51.29
  • 200 free 2:00.33/1:48.40
  • 400 free 4:15.25/4:54.30

Triola swam those SCM times at the Spanish Jr Championships last year. She also holds long course bests of 2:04.37 in the 200 free, 4:18.51 in the 400 free, 8:58.61 in the 800 free, and 17:09.29 in the 1500 free. For the 400 and mile, her long course times convert to very strong times of 4:49.64 and 16:49.10, respectively.

At the 2013 European Junior Championships, Triola anchored Spain’s 4×100 free relay to a sixth place finish.

The FIU roster certainly lives up to its name– of 24 female swimmers and divers, 17 are not from the USA.  Triola will be another international addition for them, as they look to repeat after winning the C-USA conference title this past season.

Triola would have scored in the top 8 in any freestyle event 100 yards or up, with her best scoring chances coming in the 200 or 500. FIU‘s 800 free relay graduated two members of its conference title winning relay, which averaged 1:48’s– right about where Triola would be converted to from SCM.
