Five Times Rank in the Top Ten as USC Sweeps Sun Devils

The USC Trojans swept duals against ASU in Tempe, taking the Sun Devil women 178-106, and the men 159-139.  Both teams had notable swims, with six NCAA “B” cuts turned in and five performances ranking in the top ten for the NCAA so far this year.

In the women’s meet, the excitement started early, as USC’s Elizabeth Stinson claimed the #2 mile in the nation so far this year with her 16:42.87.

USC managed to sweep three events in a row, starting with a 1-4 finish in the 100 back led by two B cut swims from Hannah Weiss (54.32,) and Anika Apostolon (54.66.)  Hannah Weiss was one of four double winners for the women, also taking the 200 back with another B cut at 1:58.26.  The Trojans also took a 1-4 sweep of the 100 breast, led by Riley Scott’s 1:02.53, and a 1-3 sweep of the 200 fly, led by Chelsea Chenault with the #19 ranked time at 1:59.72.  Chenault and Scott were also double winners, with Chenault winning the 500 free at 4:50.75 and Scott taking the 200 breast with a B cut at 2:14.37.

Apostolon landed her second B cut of the night later in the meet, with 49.23 in the 100 free.  That time moved her up to the #5 ranking in the NCAA so far this year.

ASU had a double winner in Mara Aiacoboae who took both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving in scores of 288.30 and 320.48.

In the men’s meet, the 1650 produced the #2 and #5 ranked times in the country, both from USC, as Pawel Furtek and Ted Singley finished in 15:17.30 and 15:35.34 respectively.  Furtek was a double winner for the Trojans, leading a 1-3 sweep of the 500 free with 4:30.49.

The men’s meet had two more double winners, both from ASU. Tadas Duskinas won the 50 free in 20.55 and the 100 fly in 48.41 for the Sun Devils.  Patrick Park won both the 100 free (45.13) and 200 fly (1:46.15.)  Park’s time in the fly was an NCAA “B” cut, and is currently ranked #10 in the NCAA.  

The closest race in the meet was taken by the Sun Devils Barkley Perry, who took the 200 back in 1:47.23, just .10 ahead of USC’s Jon Knox who finished in 1:47.33.
