Finnerty Sweeps Breaststrokes with 1:50.1 200 Breast

2018 MEN’S NCAA SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Last night, Indiana’s Ian Finnerty made history as the first man to break 50 seconds in the 100 breast. Tonight, he looked to help his team in the points battle with a sweep of the breaststroke races. Finnerty was the top seed in the 200 breast after prelims, and he stayed on top tonight to win in 1:50.17. That moves him up to #5 all-time.

Splits:

  • 1st 50 Split- 24.07
  • 2nd 50 Split- 27.21 (51.28)
  • 3rd 50 Split- 28.46
  • 4th 50 Split- 30.43 (58.89)
  • Final Time- 1:50.17

Finnerty blasted a 51.28 on the way out, a time that would have tied for 3rd in the individual 100 breast (including Finnerty’s 49.69). Cal’s Andrew Seliskar started to reel him in down the stretch. Seliskar closed in 28.91 to Finnerty’s 30.43, but came up short as he touched 2nd in 1:50.42. That moves Seliskar to #6 all-time and marks a new Cal school record.
