As outlined in the chart, if a country only enters one swimmer in an event they must have achieved the ‘B’ qualification standard. If a country enters two swimmers in an event they both must have attained the ‘A’ standard. It is also possible for a country to enter a swimmer(s) into the meet regardless of time standards if they meet certain criteria. The criteria is as follows:

  • If a federation has no swimmers qualified they can enter two male and two female participants.
  • If they have one or two or three swimmers qualified they can enter additional swimmers up to four (two male, two female). The exception is that if a country has 3 men with time standards, they can still send a 4th female swimmer, for an uneven ratio.
  • Swimmers entered without qualifying times must have competed in their nations National Championships or a FINA approved qualifying event.

In terms of relays, each country can only enter one team as is the case in every major international competition.

The competition period to achieve these qualifying times began on March 1st, 2016 and ends on July 5th, 2017. Only times posted at FINA approved events will be accepted by FINA.

Read the full outline of the qualification criteria on FINA’s website here.

This will be a great opportunity for Hungary to host these Championships after the great international success achieved recently by national stars such as Katinka HosszuLaszlo Cseh and Daniel Gyurta.
