Fernando Scheffer Breaks Brazilian/South American 200 Free Records in 1:44.66

2020 TOKYO SUMMER OLYMPIC GAMES

Brazil’s Fernando Scheffer broke the Brazilian and South American Records in the 200 freestyle with a 1:44.66 in the final of the men’s 200 freestyle in Tokyo, placing 3rd behind gold medalist Tom Dean and runner-up Duncan Scott, both representing Great Britain.

Scheffer split 24.24/26.01/27.03/27.38, turning in the 2nd position at both the 100- and 150-meter marks. Scheffer’s effort Monday night takes the prior record down by 0.39, set by Scheffer at these Games in 1:45.05 during the prelims. In prelims, Scheffer split 24.76/26.49/26.78/27.02. Though he wasn’t as fast on the back half in finals, he was out a full second faster and managed to hang on, getting to the wall 0.02 ahead of Romania’s David Popovici who finished 4th in 1:44.68.
