Fast-Rising Sophia Cherkez Gives Verbal Pledge to Cornell

Sophia Cherkez, a two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American from Hickory, North Carolina has verbally committed to the application process at Cornell University.* Cherkez swims for Saint Stephens High School and Hickory Foundation YMCA Seahorse Swim Team.

During the summer of 2013, just before her freshman year of high school, Cherkez made finals at her first YMCA Long Course Nationals in the 200 fly. At the 2015 NCHSAA 3A State Championships she was 4th in the 200 IM and 3rd in the 500 free. Last year as a junior, she placed 3rd in the 200 IM and 2nd in the 500 free at the North Carolina 3A State Meet.

Last spring at the 2016 YMCA Short Course Nationals in Greensboro, Cherkez placed 18th in the 400 IM and 21st in the 500 free. This summer, she was a part of the women’s championship team at YMCA Long Course Nationals, contributing an 11th in the 400 IM, an 11th in the 400 free, and a 4th in the 800 free; she was also part of the YSST 1st-place 800 free and 400 free relays.
