Johns Hopkins senior Evan Holder blasted a 1:36.67 in the 200 free in prelims on Day Two of the 2017 NCAA Division III Championships to break the meet record by .13, and come within .04 of the Division III national record. It was a personal best by .26 and only his second time under 1:37. He was .65 faster than he had been in prelims last year. Holder was runner-up in the event in 2016 and fourth in 2015.

Holder swam in the final heat of the event. It was an exciting race, with Keene State senior Ryan Boraski jumping out front on the first 50 of the final heat and up by a half body-length up at the 100. Holder stayed right at Boraski’s feet and made his move at the 150 as Boraski couldn’t stay on the pace he had set for the first six laps. Holder’s splits were:

  • 22.52
  • 24.58 (47.10)
  • 24.61 (1:11.71)
  • 24.96 (1:36.67)

Holder has another shot at the Division III record in tonight’s final. It has belonged to Kenyon’s Dennis Mulvhill since 1988.
