Ethan Heasley Scratches 200 IM to Focus on 500 Free at WJ-West (Heat Sheets)

2019 SPEEDO WINTER JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS – WEST

There are only a few noteworthy scratches for the first prelims session, on the second day, of the 2019 Speedo Winter Junior Championships – West meet in Federal Way, Washington.

Chief among them is USA Swimming Junior National Team member Ethan Heasley dropping out of the boys’ 200 IM, where he was the 10th seed. He’ll focus instead on the 500 free, which is the first race in Thursday’s morning session, where he’s the #2 seed.

Also ditching that 200 IM is Matthew Chung, the 14th seed. He’ sstill entered in the other 2 individual races of the day, including the 500 free (4:27.08, 15th seed), and the 50 free (yards seed).

Thursday’s highlights in the prelims session will be the sprint freestyles, where the boys’ race features 3 swimmers seeded at sub-20: Aiden HayesMatt King, and Bence Szabados. The girls race includes the #10 recruit in the class of 2020 and USC commit Kaitlyn Dobler as the top seed (22.43), but don’t sleep on her World Junior Championships teammate Amy Tang, who swam a best time of 48.34 last week at the Huskey Invitational. The 16-year old has been best times in the 100 and 200 yard frees already this fall, but not yet in the 50.
