16-year old Ethan Heasley continued to build his star-power and reputation on Saturday at the 2018 Federal Way Sectional Championships when he won the boys’ 500 yard free in 4:19.82 for his 4th event win in 3 nights. That put him 5 seconds clear of the field and broke the old Meet Record of 4:21.44 done by Jared Markham in 2011. That moved him to 18th all-time in the age group and left him half-a-second shy of a U.S. Nationals qualifying time.

Heasley has previous wins in the 400 IM (3:45.56), 200 fly (1:45.93), and 1000 free (8:59.64), and still has entries left in the 200 IM and 1650 free for Sunday.

Katharine Berkoff from Missoula, Montana matched him with a 4th win of her own, shaving .01 seconds off her previous personal best to win the 100 back in 51.93. Fort Collins’ Kylee Alons (52.69) and Zoe Bartel (53.53) were 2nd and 3rd, respectively.

Besides Heasley’s swim, one other Meet Record went down on Sautrday, when 16-year old Caspar Corbeau and 18-year old Daniel Roy tied in the 100 breaststroke in 53.42. That took a tenth off Jian Mao’s 2017 record in the race.

Corbeau went out 4-tenths of a second faster than Roy, but Roy, who is a better 200 breaststroker and won that race earlier in the meet, was faster by an identical margin on the second 50 to pull in the tie.

Corbeau’s time is a best by almost 2 seconds and puts him 7th all-time in the 15-16 rankings – one spot ahead of Ethan Dang, who was 3rd on Saturday in 53.80 but didn’t swim a best time. Roy’s time is also a personal best and moves him to 32nd in the all-time 17-18 rankings.

Other Day 3 (Saturday) Winners:

  • Ethan Harder completed a backstroke sweep with a 47.59 in the 100 early in Saturday’s finals session. Kyle Millis was 2nd (48.21), and Cale Berkoff, brother of Katharine, was 3rd (48.58). Harder previously won the 200 back on Thursday in 1:43.19.
  • Sarah Dimeco from Issaquah Swim Team won the girls’ 500 free in 4:47.13. That gave her plenty of breathing room over the field (better than a 4-second margin of victory), but was short of her 4:44 personal best.
  • Fort Collins’ Zoe Bartel won the 100 breaststroke in 58.72, missing Ariana Kukors’ Meet Record by a tenth-of-a-second. The top 3 finishers, including her teammate Coleen Gillilan (59.59) and Kaitlyn Dobler (59.81) were all under 1 minute.
  • Gillilan came back in the very next event to win the 100 fly in 52.29. The fatigue showed a little, as she swam slower than the Meet Record of 52.00 she did in prelims. This was another Fort Collins 1-2 finish, with Kylee Alons touching 2nd in 52.78.
  • 20-year old Hawaiian ‘aukai Lileikis won the 100 fly in 46.28, which was another best time for him after previously winning the 100 and 200 frees this week.
  • Fort Collins’ girls team won the 400 free relay in a new Meet Record of 3:19.59. Alons had the team’s fastest split on the anchor of 49.00, and the team pulled in a swimmer from the club’s next generation with 14-year old Mackenzie Nedom joining the group and splitting 51.11.
  • Tualatin Hills, anchored by a 43.52 from the breaststroker Corbeau, won the boys’ 400 free relay in 2:59.47. That put them .12 seconds short of their own Oregon Swimming Open record.
