Emily Escobedo Resurfaces with 2:23 200 Breast, Makes National Team

2017 U.S. OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

With the summer wrapping up soon, the USA National Team will be named after the conclusion of all four selection meets. Two meets have finished– Worlds Trials (US Nationals) and the World Championships. The next meets up are the U.S. Open, which began on Wednesday, and the World University Games.

This means that there are just two chances left for a swimmer to make the National Team. Simplified, the team consists of the top 6 finishers in every Olympic event from combined results of the four selection meets. National Team members gain access to USA Swimming financial stipends, athlete health insurance and a number of other USA Swimming perks. A broader and more detailed explanation of National Team benefits can be seen here.

Below is the selection criteria, verbatim, from USA Swimming:

  • The top six athletes in Olympic Events from the combined results of the 2017 Phillips 66 USA Swimming National Championships (World Championship and World University Games Trials), 2017 FINA World Championships, 2017 World University Games, and the 2017 USA Swimming U.S. Open.
  • Times from Prelims, Semi-Finals and Finals (A, B and C) only will be used.
  • Relay lead offs, time trials, swim-offs and intermediate splits will not be included.

NATIONAL TEAM TRACKER

Below are the swimmers who have swum times fast enough to be selected to the 2017-18 National Team, if the team were to be chosen today. Remember that relay lead-offs and time trials DO NOT COUNT, which is why times for some events (like 100 free and 100 back) aren’t the fastest times that a swimmer has gone at a selection meet. We’ll be keeping these lists updated as we get through the US Open and then WUGs.

DAY 2 MOVEMENTS

This morning, Emily Escobedo (who was absent at Worlds Trials) went a lifetime best 2:23.88 in the 200 breast. Though she DQ’d in the final (she would’ve been 2:22, however), her prelims time does count for national team selection, and she moves into 3rd on the list for that event behind Bethany Galat and Lilly King. With her being in third, even if both WUGs Americans in this race go faster than her at that meet, she will definitely be selected with that time. Both WUGs swimmers (Kayla Brumbaum and Miranda Tucker) are already in the top 6 anyways.

Lisa Bratton went 2:08.78 tonight to take 2nd overall at the US Open, and she now moves into the top 6 of the 200 back, along with Kylie Stewart who swam a 2:09.68 this morning. Jonathan Roberts‘ time from tonight, a 1:56.88, makes him the third-fastest 200 backstroker this year for the Americans, and he locks up his spot for national team selection with only one meet left to qualify in this race (WUGs) and only 2 people to race the event there (both are already in the top 6 this year– Robert Owen and Austin Katz).

And, what’s the story behind her missing Trials?

Why they don’t use world juniors as another selection meet? We’ll see some great times there and probably a few US teens who will be in the top 6 performers.

Even junior nationals next week should count. Every big meet should count.

I agree. Alex Sumner went a PB of 2:09.84 at NCSAs in the 200 back, which is just outside of the times needed to make the national team. She is also swimming at World Juniors and could drop time there, which means she has a legitimate chance of being in the top 6 times. Maybe they don’t count the junior meets because the swimmers there are usually eligible for the junior national team, and are also not eligible for most of the monetary benefits because of their amateur status.

I believe Blake Pieroni was faster in the 100 Free at WC leading off a relay
