YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men’s swimming and diving team used four wins on day two to win the EMU Invitational Saturday, Dec. 3, with a total of 1,247.5 points. The Eagles finished ahead of Wayne State (736) and Ball State (732) in the team standings to come away victorious.
After picking up second and third place finishes in the 200 Medley Relay, the Eagles turned its focus to the 400 IM. Competing in the event for the first time this season, the Green and White nabbed two of the top-three spots. Sophomore Tosh Kawaguchi (Cary, N.C.-Cary) clocked in well-ahead of the competition with a time of 4:01.74, more than five seconds ahead of the runner-up to reel in his second win of the weekend. Senior Kyle Lichtenberg (Clarkston, Mich.) clocked in with a time of 4:08.46 to take third.
Juniors Logan Burton (Chesapeake, Va.-Hickory) and Connor Johnson (Fort Bragg, N.C.-Terry Sanford) posted a pair of season-bests in the 100 butterfly as Eastern claimed two more top-three finishes. Burton was the runner-up with a time of 49.29, while Johnson’s time of 50.00 ranked third.
In the 200 freestyle, sophomore Jake Tyson (Ipswich, England-Northgate) and freshman Alex Arrieta (Miami, Fla.-Doral Academy Center) put the Eagles back on track. Tyson clocked in with the fastest time by an Eagle this season to secure the win with a mark of 1:39.92. Arrieta turned in a career-best time of 1:41.07, finishing on the heels of Tyson to claim second.
Freshman Matthew Tsenkov (Sofia, Bulgaria-General Vladimir Stoychev) grabbed a third-place finish in the 100 breaststroke with a career-best time of 56.63, before EMU senior Cole Bateman (Hutchinson, Minn.-Hutchinson) and Burton recorded a pair of season-bests in the 100 backstroke. Bateman and Burton combined for a pair of top-three finishes, finishing second and third, respectively. Bateman touched in with a time of 50.17, his best mark of the season, while Burton’s mark of 50.39 gave him third.
The Eagles closed out the morning session with a 1-2 punch in the 800 Free Relay. The team of Lichtenberg, Arrieta, Burton, and Tyson clocked in with a time of 6:39.12 to win the race. Meanwhile, freshman Eric Akins (Houston, Texas-Klein), sophomore JF Murphy (Montreal, Quebec-Sainte-Anne), junior Ryan Current (Chanhassen, Minn.-Minnetonka), and Kawaguchi finished second in 6:46.13.
Before kicking off the evening session, the Eagles completed the diving portion of the meet. Coming off a strong showing on the 3-meter on Friday, EMU posted another incredible performance on the 1-meter on Saturday. Sophomore Tom Gillis (Halifax, Nova Scotia-Citadel) was the lone diver to break the 300-point barrier, posting a score of 309.65 to earn first-place. Senior Alex Chan (Toronto, Ontario-Neil McNeil Secondary) scored 290.60 to take second, while freshman Noah Galluzzo completed the sweep.
Transitioning back to the swimming events, the Green and White kicked off the final session of the weekend with a win in the 200 Free Relay. Tyson, Johnson, and Burton teamed up with redshirt sophomore Maxwell Wilkinson (South Lyon, Mich.-South Lyon) for a first-place finish with the second-fastest time in the Mid-American Conference this season, touching in with a time of 1:22.93. EMU’s other relay team, made up of Bateman, senior Erik Brinkhoff (Bethel Park, Pa.-Bethel Park), freshman Mark Krusinski (Brecksville, Ohio-Brecksville Broadview Heights), and senior Kevin Moore (Phoenix, Ariz.-Boulder Creek) also posted a top-three finish, snagging third with a time of 1:23.57.
Arrieta and Lichtenberg posted season-best times en route to finishing second and third, respectively, in the 500 free, before the Eagles turned in a sweep of the top-three spots in the 200 IM. Tyson dropped nearly two seconds off his previous season-best to touch in first with a time of 1:52.40. The time also marked the fastest by an Eagle this season. Sophomore Ricky Perez and Kawaguchi completed the sweep, using season-best times to round out the top-three. Perez clocked in at 1:52.77, while Kawaguchi was right on his heels, finishing with a time of 1:52.79.
Johnson added a second-place finish in the 50 free before the meet concluded with the 400 Medley Relay, where the Eagles claimed first and third-place finishes. Kawaguchi, Tsenkov, Johnson, and Burton combined for the win, turning in the second-quickest time in the conference this season, clocking in at 3:17.69.
The EMU Invitational marked the final competition of the calendar year for the Eagles. Eastern returns to action next month, Jan. 14, at home in Mid-American Conference dual action against Ball State at 1 p.m.
