EMU leads on both the men’s and women’s sides after day one at the Eastern Michigan Invitational. They put on a dominating performance in the 1650, with freshman Nicole Swartz and Junior Kyle Lichtenberg winning their respective events.
Eastern Michigan:
Men-
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Through the first day of competition, the Eastern Michigan University men’s swimming and diving team holds the lead at the EMU Invitational at Jones Natatorium. The Eagles registered four first place finishes on their way to 352 points. Eastern leads the team standings, while Wayne State (223) and Ball State (197) round out the top three after day one.
Junior Kyle Lichtenberg (Clarkston, Mich.) opened the action with a first place finish in the 1650 Freestyle. Competing in the event for the first time this season, Lichtenberg’s preliminary time best the field by nearly a minute before he claimed the top spot, touching in with a time of 16:25.18.
Lichtenberg’s performances was followed up by second and third place finishes by juniorCole Bateman (Hutchinson, Mich.-Hutchinson) and freshman Tosh Kawaguchi (Cary, N.C.-Cary) in the 200 Backstroke.
The Eagles returned to the top spot in the 100 Free, courtesy of senior Andrew Henry(Garner, N.C.-West Johnston). After turning in the best preliminary time, Henry finished in 45.34 to claim first place.
Senior Chris Hodges (Lincolnshire, Ill.-Stevenson) followed the Eagles’ captain’s lead, finishing nearly four seconds faster than the rest of the field on his way to a win in the 200 Breaststroke. Junior Kyle Aerne (Lake Villa, Ill.-Lakes) rouned out the top three, touching in in 2:06.81.
Freshman Jake Tyson (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Northgate) finished on the heels of Wayne State’s Rasmus Olsen, taking second place in the 200 Buttefly. Junior Marcin Rzyski touched in just behind Tyson, placing third.
Eastern Michigan returned to the top of the podium in the 400 Free Relay as Tyson and Henry teammed up with senior Dylan Crompton (Redford, Mich.-Thurston) and Erik Gissen (Karlstad, Sweden-Alvkullegymnasiet). The foursome shaved more than three seconds off their preliminary time, earning 40 points for the Green and White. EMU finished out the one-two finish thanks to Bateman, sophomore Logan Burton (Chesapeake, Va.-Hickory), senior Krzysztof Gilski (Dywity, Poland-Adam Mickiewicz State Secondary)and freshman Branson Smith (Louisville, Ky.-Ballard).
The Eagles return to the pool tomorrow, Dec. 5, at 10 a.m. for day two of the EMU Invitational.

(EMUEagles.com) – Placing two in the top three in nearly every event on day one of the EMU Invitational, the Eastern Michigan University women’s swimming & diving team is in the drivers seat heading into the final day of the invite at Jones Natatorium. Senior Mary Kate MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-Detroit Country Day) and junior Carly Jackson(La Porte, Ind.-La Porte) turned in season-best performances to lead the Eagles to a strong day one showing.
The Eagles lead the way with 359 points after day one of competition. Wayne State University ranks second with 281 points to their credit, followed by Ashland (216), and Tiffin (87).
Competing in the 1650 Freestyle for the first time in her career, freshman Nicole Swartz (Dayton, Ohio-Centerville) took the field by storm. After posting a event best 17:00.00 time in the preliminaries, Swartz reeled in 20 points for the Green and White with a first place finish. Junior Grace Van Allen (Indianapolis, Ind.-North Central) finished a second, touching in with a time of 17:11.80.
Junior Alexis Mitcheltree (Moon Twp., Pa.-Moon Area) followed Swartz’s lead, edging the field by more than three seconds on her way to a win in the 200 Backstroke. Freshman Erika Guenther (Hudson, Wis.-Hudson) finished third, just behind Wayne State’s Emily Marginean.
Senior Becca Detro (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel) bested her preliminaries time by nearly a second to claim the top spot in the 100 Free. Junior Sierra Wagner (Huntsville, Texas-Huntsville) took an early lead but Detro’s strong second split left Wagner four tenths of a second behind for a second place finish.
After a third place finish by freshman Delaney Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg) in the 200 Breaststroke, Jackson and freshman Emilie Desnoyers finished second and third, respectively, in the 200 Butterfly.
The Eagles closed out the day with a one-two punch in the 400 Free Relay. Freshman Dora Vrcic teammed up with MacLean, Detro, and Van Allen for the Eagles’ fourth victory in the event. The foursome shaved roughly four seconds of their preliminary time, touching in with a time of 3:24.88. Freshman Stephanie Johnston, Desnoyers, Wagner, and Mitcheltree weren’t behind the Green and White frontrunners, finishing second.
After day one of competition, the Eagles have 359 points and stand in first place. Competition resumes tomorrow at 10 a.m. in Jones Natatorium.

Ashland:
Head swimming coach Derick Roe took his Ashland University Eagles back to his old stomping grounds in Ypsilanti, Mich., for the Eastern Michigan Invitational on Friday (Dec. 4).
Roe is a 2010 graduate of Eastern Michigan, where he holds the program record in the 50-yard freestyle.
After Day 1 of the EMU Invite, the Eagle men sit fourth out of five teams with 166 points. Eastern Michigan’s men lead with 352 points. The Eagle women sit third in a four-team field with 216 points. Eastern Michigan also leads in the women’s standings with 359 points.
Friday began well for the Eagles, with senior Hannah Mattarwinning the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:16.70. Mattar also finished fifth in the 200 fly (2:06.63).
Sophomore Ryan Deemer earned bronze in the 1,650 free, touching in 16:14.32. Eagle junior Megan Schultz claimed fourth in the 200 back with a 2:08.05. Sophomore Chris Georgiadis placed fifth in the 200 fly, reaching in 1:52.92.
The Eagles will be back in the water for Day 2 of the Eastern Michigan Invite on Saturday, (Dec. 5), beginning at 10 a.m.

Men-
YPSILANTI, Mich. — The Wayne State University men’s swimming and diving team earned two NCAA “B” standard times during the opening day of the Eastern Michigan Invitational on Friday evening. After 14 events, the Warriors are in second-place with 223 points.
RELAY RESULTS
– Freshman Rasmus Olsen (Kastrup, Denmark), junior Josh Schacht (Schoolcraft, Mich. / Mattawan), senior Eric Gensheimer (Farmington, Mich.) and sophomore Tyler Roshak (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Harrison) finished third in the 400 freestyle relay in a time of 3:06:43.
INDIVIDUAL RESULTS
– Junior Juan David Molina Perez (Medellin, Columbia) earned a victory in the 200 backstroke with a mark of 1:46.57, and freshman Dmytro Drobnych (Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine) placed fourth with a time of 1:50.94.
– Olsen won the 200 butterfly in 1:49.33 and set a NCAA “B” standard.
– Freshman Ahmed Ahmed (Alexandria, Egypt) placed second and set a NCAA “B” standard in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 16:08.30, while senior Kris Hector (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) finished in seventh (16:47.59).
– Senior Jayson Hansen (Grand Blanc, Mich.) finished the 200 breaststroke in 2:05.10 earning a second place.
– Roshak recorded a third-place finish with a mark of 46.59, while Schacht finished fourth in 47.00.

YPSILANTI, Mich. — The Wayne State University women’s swimming and diving squad started strong during the opening day of the Eastern Michigan Invitational on Friday evening. After 14 events, the Warriors are in second-place with 281 points and set three NCAA “B” standards.
RELAY RESULTS
– Freshman Lezlie Bueno Estrada (Montes Urales, Mexico), senior Elly Maleski (Cedar, Mich. / Traverse City West), sophomores Makayla Myers (Hudsonville, Mich.) and Meghan Lamb (East China, Mich. / St. Clair) placed third in the 400 freestyle relay in a time of 3:31.41. The quartet also set a NCAA provisional standard.
INDIVIDUAL RESULTS
– Senior Hannah Loesch (Pensacola, Fla.) posted a NCAA “B” standard after finished second place in the 200 breaststroke (2:20.32).
– In 200 backstroke, freshman Emily Marginean (Tecumseh, Ont.) touched the finish line in second place with a time of 2:04.92. Juniors Brenna Gabrielson (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) and Emily Maraskine (Midland, Mich. / Dow) and sophomore Abi Johns (Holland, Mich.) also earned top-10 finishes.
– Bueno Estrada set a NCAA “B” standard after placing third in the 100 freestyle (52:01). The freshman also set a “B” standard in the 50 freestyle two weeks ago against Calvin. Lamb and freshmen Dani Kudla (Lake Orion, Mich.) andEmma Weber (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Portage Central) also recorded top-10 finishes in this event.
– Freshmen Ellie Dean (Midland, Mich. / Dow) and Morgan Kollen (Zeeland, Mich. / West) finished third and fourth in the 1650 freestyle with marks of 17:32.56 and 17:32.67. Seniors Kaylee Dolinski (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) andMallory Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich. also placed in the top-10 with times of 17:47.00 and 18:26.10, respectively.
– Freshmen Tai Furnari (Pleasant Ridge, Mich. / Ferndale) and Hannah Berich (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) placed sixth and seventh with times of 2:09.26 and 2:11.17, respectively.
