East Bay’s Bill, UC San Diego’s Schilling Named WWPA Players of the Year

OAKLAND, Calif.Auriel Bill of Cal State East Bay and Chanel Schilling of UC San Diego highlight the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) all-conference teams announced Wednesday.

The pair were named Co-Players of the Year following a vote by the conference’s head coaches. It is the second-straight WWPA Player of the Year nod for Bill, who took home solo honors last year. Interestingly enough, Schilling and Bill had won the WWPA Newcomer of the Year in consecutive years (2016 and 2017, respectively).

Bill, a junior from Saskatchewan, led the Pioneers with 90 points on 44 goals and 46 assists. Her point and assist totals ranked top-three in the WWPA. In addition, she was named to the First Team for the third straight year.

It is the second All-WWPA First Team accolade for Schilling, who guided the Tritons to a conference-best 18 wins during regular season. The senior from Santa Barbara scored 28 goals with a pair of assists, in addition to drawing an impressive 44 drawn exclusions on the campaign.

Salem’s Margherita Garibbo was tabbed the WWPA Newcomer of the Year after the freshman led the conference with 101 total points on 65 goals and 36 assists.

UC San Diego led the conference with six players being named All-WWPA. Ciara Franke and Bennett Bugelli joined Schilling on the First Team, with Taylor Onstott (Honorable Mention), Grace Pevehouse (Honorable Mention) and Maddie Bockman (All-Freshman) also earning nods.

The 2019 WWPA Championship is set for this week, April 26-28, in Geneva, Ohio.
