Dressel Posts 21.5 50 Free in Day 2 Finals (Race Video)

2019 MISSION VIEJO SWIM MEET OF CHAMPIONS

Video captured by Jack Spitser. Reported by Braden Keith.

After a breakthrough brace of 47.9s on Friday, World Champion Caeleb Dressel had a pair of more measured preliminary swims on Saturday morning in Mission Viejo at the Fran Crippen Memorial Swim Meet of Champions. Swimming heats of both the 50 and 200 freestyles, Dressel qualified 1st in each – opening with a 1:48.87 in the 200 free, and finishing his session with a 22.31 in the 50 free about 50 minutes later.

Tonight, after posting a 1:50 in the 200 free and a 22.1 in the semi-final of the 50 free, Dressel capped the night with a speedy 21.5 50 free.

I don’t think time matters at Worlds or Olympics in 50 free. It is who gets their hand on the wall first.

Ya but I think most elite athletes would say they rather go 20.9 and get second in the 50 then go 21.35 or something and win. Elite athletes care about the clock.

I think most would prefer the win. Gold medal trumps all.

I think Lotte Friis is prouder of her 15:38.88 for second in 2013 than her 15:49.59 for first in 2011.

Strongly disagree. Everybody wants the win.

@Swammer. Ah, yes! Everyone remembers Kurt Krumpholz who set the world record in the men’s 400 meter free at the US Olympic Trials in 1972 with a time of 4:00.11. He finished 6th in the finals and didn’t make the US Olympic team.

2017 World Trials: 21.53 shaved and rested
2019 June meet: 21.51 in the midst of heavy training unshaved and not rested.

you don’t know that, do you? it’s just assumptions. Chalmers also said he wasn’t rested in April and only swam 0.1 faster in June. I don’t doubt Dressel will go significantly faster than his recent times but some people have crazy expectations just based on these assumptions.

No, he actually has it guaranteed because . . . he can see the future.

Why would he be in heavy training one month out from World’s? I would think he is into speed work and then 2-3 week taper.

Agreed. World trials 2017 was at a similar time as this meet (a little closer to Worlds). He is definitely not in heavy training.

Good point, but he definitely isn’t shaved either.

Of course he wouldn’t shave for Mission meet there is no competition. I think he is working on speed and some race strategy in the 100 and 200 frees. He is setting himself up well for Worlds. Quite frankly US needs him to go under 47.0 in the relay if he is not lead off and low 47+ if he is lead off to beat the Brazilians. I will be rooting for him at Worlds but everyone knows anything can happen in the 50″s. He has the speed and endurance for the 100s

This meet should be compared to 2017 WC Trials, but I very much doubt Dressel is in the midst of heavy training. Tokyo 2020 is the ultimate objective, so I suspect Dressel/Troy is treating this meet as prep for next year’s Olympic Trials/Olympic Games. We’re a month out from WC, which is the same spread between OT and the OG.

I don’t think 4 1/2 weeks out qualifies as “the midst of heavy training.” You can see that people are starting to come down and go fast, all over the world. But yeah CD looks sharp this summer.

The tapered vs rested vs in training debate that seems to follow Dressel and to a somewhat lesser extent Chalmers every time they swim has become the Yanny vs Laurel debate of this site. World’s can’t come soon enough!
