Detti Puts Up Impressive 3:46.59 to Win the 400 Freestyle in Milan

On the first day of the Trophy of Milan Gabriele Detti posted a lifetime best of 14:48.46 to finish second to Gregorio Paltrinieri and put himself in the second place position in the world rankings. Tonight Detti returned to the pool to win the men’s 400 freestyle in a time of 3:46.59, which is just off his lifetime best of 3:46.46 that he put up in December and currently tops the 2015-16 world rankings.

His time is the second fastest recorded in 2016 with only David McKeon having posted a faster time of 3:46.48 at the New South Wales Championships.

There were several swimmers who came away with multiple wins on Saturday. Martina Carraro won both the 50 and 100 breaststroke. Carraro’s time of 30.79 ties Leiston Pickett for the fourth place spot in the world rankings. She won the 100 meter distance in a time of 1:07.31.

Fabio Scozzoli also took both breaststroke events on the second day of competition. Scozzoli won the 50 in a time of 27.82 and followed that up taking the 100 in a time of 1:01.48.

Simone Sabbioni won both backstroke events posting a 55.15 in the 100 and a 25.68 in the 50 while Piero Codia took the 50 butterfly in a time of 27.73 and the 100 butterfly in a time of 52.37.

Federica Pellegrini, who recorded an impressive 1:55.92 in the 200 freestyle on Friday, won the women’s 100 freestyle in a season’s best of 54.34. Luca Dotto took the men’s event in a time of 48.77.

Mack Horton went 3:41 about 2 weeks ago now. I don’t think all of your data is correct because I think David was also faster that night. The Australian trials were pretty fast this year.

Actually, Detti is Morini’s nephew 🙂 Paltrinieri joined them before the London Olympics and I believe they train together in Ostia most of the time.

Paolo, do Paltrinieri and Detti train together?

Yes, they are good friends but tremendously competitive in daily training under the guidance of the great Stefano Morini, their coach.
Their results in 1500 free were really astonishing, also considering Paltrinieri’s capacity to perform well also during hard training.
Detti, after last season injuries, is in a clear improving path and he has a bright future also in the 400 free, no doubt about that.

Now, looking at Rio, the question for Gabriele Detti is: better focusing on 1500 free where he’s a sure medal contender, or trying the double 400-1500 with ambition of final (and then who knows?) in the 400 free the first day of competition?

No doubt that after Rio Detti will be a very strong 400 freestyler.
