West Virginia University is getting an early start on forming its class of 2020; after receiving nods from Brandon Christian, Gabriel Swardson, Ryan Kelly, and Trayton Saladin, the Mountaineers have now added Wilmington, Delaware’s Jack Portmann to the list of verbal commits.

“I chose West Virginia University because as soon as I arrived on campus I felt a connection with the team and coaches. They are a very close and supportive group. I’m looking forward to contributing to the team to reach its goals, as well as, working towards achieving my personal goals. Excited to be a Mountaineer!”

Portmann is a senior at Salesianum School in Wilmington, and the reigning Delaware state champion in the 200 IM (1:52.37) and runner-up in the 100 fly (49.42). He swims at Delaware Swim Team under head coach Pablo Marmolejo, who also swam for West Virginia University and who still holds the school record in the 200 fly.

Portmann specializes in fly, breast and IM. His best times from the past year are:

  SCY LCM
100 fly 49.42 57.72
100 breast 57.73 1:06.38
200 breast 2:03.89 2:22.96
200 IM 1:52.27 2:11.71
400 IM 4:03.99 4:44.81

Portmann’s versatility will allow WVU head coach Vic Riggs to use him wherever he has holes. Already Portmann would have scored in the “B” finals of the 100 fly, 100/200 breast, and 200/400 IM at the 2015 Big 12 Championships.
