Day-by-Day Schedule for Swimming at the 2019 World University Games

The schedule for the swimming competition at the 2019 World University Games (Summer Universiade) has finally been released. With even competitors having been in the dark until well into the spring, the schedule release comes about a week before the swimming competition is scheduled to begin in Napoli, Italy.

The events seem to be in the same order as they were in Taipei in 2017, with the exception of dropping open water swimming from the schedule. There is a small difference in that prelims sessions are half-an-hour later than they were in 2017. That gives athletes a longer gap from the end of finals to prelims the next day, but does wind up slightly reducing the recovery time between prelims and finals.

Session Start Times:

  • Local, Central European Time: 9:30 Prelims/18:00 Finals
  • Beijing Time: 15:30 Prelims/24:00 (midnight) finals
  • Sydney Time: 17:30 Prelims/2:00 (next day) finals
  • Los Angeles Time: 00:30 Prelims/9:00 Finals
  • New York Time: 3:30 Prelims/12:00 Finals

Full Schedule, including timeline, is below. Times are local Napoli time.

What events is Dean Farris swimming? 100 free and 100 back and relays?

Only slated for the 400 free relay.

OK. Maybe they’ll let him swim the first leg and get an official time.

I think it’ll be slower than we expect from his NCAAs. Maybe 48.5.

They can (and likely will) use him on the 4×200 relay.

KeithM – Didn’t have time for a longer comment, and just meant that he was only officially on the roster for the 4×100 free. However, it’s worth noting that Farris only actually has the 7th-fastest 200 free time of anyone on the US roster.

LeVant – 1:46.39
Apple – 1:46.56
House – 1:46.95
Julian – 1:47.57
Freeman – 1:47.70
Newkirk – 1:47.80
Farris – 1:47.94
Katz – 1:48.44

Apple has the 50 free prelims and semis that day, and Katz has the 200 back. LeVant and Freeman have the individual spots. Could swim House, Freeman, Newkirk, and Farris in prelims. Fastest split joins LeVant, Apple, and Freeman in the final? Apple will have… Read more »

Apple is on the Worlds roster as a relay-only swimmer. Those who are relay-only swimmers for Worlds are still eligible to swim individual events at WUGs or Pan Ams. For instance, Nathan Adrian and Michael Chadwick are on the Worlds roster for the 4×100, but both are swimming the 50/100 free at Pan Ams. Quite a few swimmers in this situation this year, including Jack LeVant, Margo Geer, and Lia Neal, probably a few more.

Coach has full discretion then I’m putting Apple and Farris straight to the final and swimming house Julian freeman and Newkirk in prelims. Levant I’m just assuming is not at full speed from his injury but he still can get on the relay with a strong showing in the individual event.
