Day 1 Glasgow: Greenbank Lowers Hours-Old British Record In Men’s 200 Back

2019 LEN EUROPEAN SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS

While competing in the first finals session of the 2019 European Short Course Championships, 22-year-old Luke Greenbank lowered his hours-old British national record en route to 200m back bronze.

After establishing himself as the 3rd-seeded swimmer out of the heats with a morning effort of 1:50.47, Greenbank busted out an even quicker mark of 1:50.09 to finish on the podium behind winner Radoslaw Kawecki of Poland and runner-up Christian Diener of Germany. Kawecki topped the field in a gold medal-worthy swim of 1:49.26, while Diener finished in 1:50.05, which means Greenbank was just .04 outside of the silver tonight.

This morning’s 1:50.47 for Greenbank was comprised of 54.34 and 56.13 to knock .26 off of Christopher Walker Hebborns’s previous decade-old record. Opening in a slower 54.52 in the final, Greenbank was 6th halfway through the race, only to bring it home in 55.57 to clinch the bronze.

Entering Glasgow, Greenbank’s personal best rested at the 1:51.16, a time he registered at the 2018 Swim England Winter Championships. As such, the Loughborough star managed to hack off more than a second just today from his previous career-quickest.

This is Greenbank’s 2nd major bronze in the past 6 months, after having reaped the same result in the 200m back at this summer’s World Championships in Gwangju, Korea. We’ll see Greenbank also contest the 100m back sprint before all is said and done here in Glasgow.
