The Dartmouth men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams are hosting the Dartmouth Invitational this weekend, welcoming Connecticut College, UMass and Northeastern (women’s team) to town. The swimming is being held at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center in White River Junction, Vermont, while the diving is taking place in Karl Michael Pool on the Dartmouth campus.
The first session of the Dartmouth Invitational ended on Friday evening with the UMass women and Dartmouth men in the lead through the first five events (200 free relay, 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, 400 medley relay). Complete results available here.
The UMass women opened the meet with a victory in the 200 free relay from Zoe Judd (24.95), Cassandra Sosnovich (24.67), Ivy Durepo (23.98), and Jocelyn Yuen (24.47), who combined for 1:38.07. Northwestern (Anna Schegoleva, Samira Hoesl, Jessica Colucci, and Rachel Green) touched second, 6/10 back; Dartmouth was third, while Connecticut College was fourth. In similar fashion, the UMass men’s quartet of Owen Wright (21.24), John Conway (22.13), Brian Stiles (21.29), and Wiktor Karpinski (20.87) won the men’s race in 1:25.53, ahead of Daniel Whitcomb, Tony Shen, Jack Long, and Misha Tovmashenko (1:25.81).
Dartmouth freshman AnnClaire MacArt led the way in the women’s 500 free in 5:02.97. Valerie Urban of Connecticut (5:07.30) and Taylor Ellis of Northeastern (5:07.44) battled for second, trading stroke for stroke during most of the race. On the men’s side, Alessandro Bomprezzi and Oliver Wyeth, both UMass freshmen, went 1-2 for the Minutemen with 4:40.50 and 4:41.82, respectively. Dartmouth freshman Zach Browne (4:42.22) came in just ahead of classmate Bruno Korbar and UMass freshman Kyle Vieira, who tied for fourth with 4:42.40 apiece.
Northwestern senior Anna Schegoleva won the 200 IM in 2:07.85, 1.3 seconds off her pool-record time. The Minutewomen’s Yuen (2:08.83) finished second, .07 in front of teammate Meriza Werenski (2:08.90). The men’s race featured another close finish, with freshman Wright of UMass leading the way in 1:54.27. The Big Green’s Henry Senkfor edged UMass’s Michael Glenn for second, 1:55.51 to 1:55.86, while Connecticut College freshman George Tilneac (1:56.16) touched fourth.
Dartmouth sprinter Kendese Nangle was the lone sub-24 woman in the field when she won the 50 free in 23.98. Northeastern freshman Sara Touchette-McGowan was runner-up with 24.20, while Minutewomen Sosnovich (24.67) and Judd (24.68) came in together at third and fourth, respectively. Wright picked up his second win of the night with a 21.46 in the men’s 50 free. Behind him were senior Ian Woon of Dartmouth (21.53) and Michael Fothergill of Connecticut (21.57).
The Huskies of Northeastern cruised to a 3:54.90 victory in the 400 medley relay behind Christine Leong (59.06), Hoesl (1:06.18), Touchette-McGowan (56.44), and Green (53.22). UMass’ A and B teams followed in second and third. Dartmouth won the men’s race in 3:26.74. James Verhagen (50.72), Jay Schulte (57.70), David Harmon (50.54), and Korbar (47.78) came in 9/10 faster than UMass’ Wyeth, Glenn, Hao Luong, and Bomprezzi (3:31.53). Sean Paquette, Drake Freiberg, Loring Bowen, and Tilneac of Connecticut College were third.
The Dartmouth Invite continues with two sessions on Saturday, one at 10 a.m. (200 medley relay, 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back) and the other at 2 p.m. (1650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, 400 free relay).
