Cunha nips Jennings in Open Water photo finish to claim World Cup lead

Brazil’s Ana Marcela Cunha won a nailbiter at the Lac St. Jean, Canada stop of FINA’s Open Water 10K World Cup to take over the lead in the points standings. Meanwhile Germany’s Andreas Waschburger picked up the men’s win on what’s been a German-dominated tour so far.

Cunha and American Christine Jennings finished a mere three-tenths of a second apart in a two-hour-long race, with Cunha finishing in 2:03.01.2 to Jennings’s 2:03.01.5. Just a short second behind was Germany’s Angela Maurer.

Cunha was sitting second on the series points, but with Cup leader and fellow Brazilian Poliana Okimoto dropping out of the tour with a back injury, Cunha had become the favorite. She backed that up here with her second win in a row and now should sit at 74 points overall.

On the men’s side, a pair of Germans lead the points standings (Thomas Lurz and Christian Reichert), but it was a different German who picked up the win in Lac St. Jean. Andreas Waschburger, running 7th on the series up till now, went 1:56.44.9 for the overall win, topping American Chip Peterson by about 5 seconds. Third went to Reichert, who should take over the points lead as Lurz did not compete in Lac St. Jean.

The World Cup circuit is at its halfway point now, with four more stops coming between now and the series finale inOctober. The next competition is next Friday, August 1, and is also in Canada. It takes place in Lac Magog.
