Cougars Take Down Pool Record En Route to Win Over Sun Devils

For the first time in ASU’s program history, the Sun Devils traveled to Pullman, Washington for a dual meet against the Washington State University Cougars. A young Cougar team took down the Women Sun Devils 155.5 to 106.5, earning first place finishes in 10 of 14 events and adding an NCAA B Cut and a Gibb Pool Record in the process.

The Cougar A Team started the meet off by squeaking past the Gibb Pool Record in the 200 Medley Relay by four one-hundredths of a second (1:42.55), the fastest finish for the Washington State University women in the event this season. Arizona State’s A Team followed up with a 1:43.64 for second place.

Sun Devil Sophomore Anna Olasz brought home the first win of the meet for ASU in the 1000 Free (10:23.47), over ten seconds ahead of Cougar Kendra Griffin (10:23.47).

ASU’s Juanita Barreto kept the ball rolling for the Sun Devils with a first-place finish in the 200 Free (1:50.95), just ahead of sophomore teammate Kat Simonovic (1:51.95).

The Cougars broke the cycle with a 1-2 sweep in the 100 Back, as senior Alison Mand lead a 1-2 sweep (56.10) with teammate Loree Olson taking second (56.87).

In the 100 Breast, Sun Devil freshman Jorie Caneta came within three-tenths of a second of the Gibb Pool Record, held by USC’s Kasey Carlson, as well as the NCAA B Cut in the event (Caneta was 1:02.87). Washington State’s Frederikke Hall was second in 1:04.25).

Cougar sophomore Elise Locke took the 200 Fly in 2:03.22, just five-tenths head of Sun Devil Lori Layne Kremer (2:03.81).

Freshman Cougar Hannah Bruggman came off of the anchor leg of the winning 200 Medley Relay to take back-to-back sprint event wins in the 50 Free (23.61), and 100 Free (51.55). Her teammate Haley Rose Love was second in the 50 with a 24.00, while ASU’s Barreto went for her second win in the 100 Free, but took 2nd in 52.14.

Washington State junior Loree Olson touched first in the 200 Back (2:00.28), ahead of ASU’s  Jennifer Morgan (2:03.44). Olson went on to win the 200 IM near the end of the meet (2:06.45), ahead of Sun Devil teammates Cheyenne Degraff (2:09.10) and Simonovic (2:09.60).

Cougar Junior Presley Wetterstrom hit the NCAA B Cut in the 200 Breast, touching first in 2:15.92. ASU’s Jorie Caneta took second with a 2:16.44.

Sun Devil Olasz’s second win of the meet was in the 500 Free (5:01.24) ahead of teammate Simonovic (5:03.57) for a 1-2 ASU sweep in the event.

Love lead a 1-2-3 Cougar sweep in the 100 Fly (56.02), all of which were sub-57 swims. Teammate Anna Brolin took second (56.31), and Mand touched third (56.44).

To close out the meet, the Cougar A Team  out-touched ASU’s A Team in the 200 Free Relay by less than four-tenths of a second (1:34.74).
