Cornell Big Red Sweeps Binghamton in Season Opener for Both Teams

Cornell’s men’s and women’s teams opened the 2015-16 season with victories at home over Binghamton on Friday. The Big Red men handled the Bearcats 165.5-117.5, while the women won 173-114. A number of Teagle Pool records fell during the contest. The men’s 400 medley relay team of Dylan Sali, Victor Luo, Luke Reisch, and Kevin Ma took more than 2 seconds off the 9-year-old mark with 3:21.71. The women’s 400 medley relay, consisting of Helen Hsu, Billy Murch Elliot, Isabelle Cecere and Jenna Immormino, also lowered the pool record by more than 2 seconds, clocking a time of 3:52.72. Swimming exhibition, the 200 free relay foursome of Immormino, Hannah Bollinger, Billy Murch Elliot, and Hsu touched in 1:35.74, taking down a mark set by Yale in 1991.

Men’s Meet

In the men’s meet, the Big Red won all 16 events. Only Sali was a multiple event-winner (59.38, 100 breast and 52.30, 100 IM); thirteen different swimmers and divers and the two relays accounted for the rest of the victories. Freshman William Lin began his collegiate career with a win in the 1000 free (9:46.64). Other event winners included: Jack Brenneman (21.33, 50 free), Vincent Declerq (1:54.44, 200 fly), Deyon Godbay (257.62, 1-meter dive), Ma (1:43.06, 200 free), Reisch (52.81, 100 back), George Schnaars (48.02, 100 free), Liam Sosinsky (2:08.08, 200 breast), Will Stange (1:56.41, 200 back), Noah Sterling (261.30, 3-meter dive), Carl St. John (51.57, 100 fly) and Brandon Sweezer (4:45.76, 500 free).

Binghamton’s freshman class was showed a lot of promise with good performances from divers Colin Coughlan and Cole Reagan, Matthew Devito (1:55.99, 200 fly), Alex Brion (48.64, 100 free), Max Willard (1:58.90, 200 back), and William Harrison (52.84, 100 fly). Senior Andrew Duszynski also had nice swims in the 500 free and 100 IM.

Women’s Meet

Cornell sophomore Victoria Chan set the stage for the women’s contest with wins in both the 1- and 3-meter diving events. Junior Currie Murch Elliot performed a hat trick, winning the 1000 free (10:26.83), 100 breast (1:07.48) and 100 IM (1:00.73). Other individual event winners were Micaela Luders (1:56.16, 200 free), Immormino (59.46, 100 back), Cecere (2:07.89, 200 fly), Jennifer Zhang (24.87, 50 free), Ellie Belilos (53.92, 100 free), Hsu (2:07.45, 200 back), Maya Hiebert (2:28.59, 200 breast), and Abby Benkert (5:13.61, 500 free).

Binghamton senior Selina Ng crushed the field in the 100 fly with 57.53; no one else was under 1:00. Other Bearcats with notable swims included Claudia Coccaro (1:00.88, 100 back), Maria Trivino (1:09.05, 100 breast), and Taryn McLaughlin (2:11.63, 200 fly and 2:32.08, 200 breast). The latter two eked out second-place finishes by just a few hundredths.

Next up for Cornell is a tri-meet at home against Ivy competitors Harvard and Dartmouth on November 13-14.
