Columbia and Cornell Split Dual Meet in Ithaca

Columbia and Cornell met in Ithaca, New York for a dual meet on Sunday. Cornell came away with the victory o nthe women’s side, but it was Columbia taking the win on the men’s side.

Distance ace Brian Tsau was a multiple event winner for the Lions, as he swept the distance freestyles. His first victory came in the 1000 free, where he clocked a 9:31.29 to lead a 1-2 punch with teammate Eric Ng (9:39.20). Tsau then completed the sweep in the 500 free with his winning time of 4:35.95.

Ellie Belilos led the way with a sweep of the sprints for the Cornell women. She clocked a 23.94 in the 50 free to just out-touch Columbia’s Mary Ashby (24.05). Belilos then turned around to win another close race in the 100 free, touching in 52.31 to Alice Boutant‘s 52.85.

PRESS RELEASE – COLUMBIA MEN

Ithaca, N.Y. – With crowns in 10 of 16 events, the Columbia men’s swimming & diving team earned its second-consecutive win and first of 2017 at Teagle Pool on Sunday, Jan.15 in a 175.5-124.5 triumph over Cornell. The Lions have now won three-straight in dual-meet action to improve to 5-2 on the season and 3-2 in conference play.

Once again Jayden Pantel was phenomenal on the boards for the Lions setting pool records in both three-meter and one-meter dive victories. In the three-meter dive Pantel tallied a top-score of 383.62 besting the previous pool record that since 1972 and earning his 28th-consecutive win in the event to remain unbeaten in his career in dual-meet action, including back-to-back 11-0 seasons in his rookie and sophomore campaigns. A pool-record score of 351.14 eclipsed the previous record that stood since 1985 and also gave the junior his fourth Ivy League victory in the one-meter dive.

Brian Tsau clocked his second Ivy League triumph of the season in the 1000 freestyle with a time 9:31.29, finishing ahead of teammate Eric Ng who hit the wall in a runner-up time of 9:39.20.  Tsau swept the distance field with a 500 freestyle win on the day at 4:35.95, leading a 1-2-3 Lions sweep as Nikita Bondarenko took runner-up at 4:37.25 and Nian-guo Liu placed third at 1:38.50. Earlier in the afternoon, Nian-guo Liu took home a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle at 1:39.21, his third conference crown of the season, out reaching Bondarenko who finished in second at 1:41.83.

Cole Stevens and Michal Zyla delivered another Columbia 1-2 punch in the 100 backstroke with Stevens leading all swimmers with a time of 50.21, edging Zyla at 50.91. Zyla returned in the 200 backstroke to capture the crown with a time of 1:49.90 to lead a 1-2-3 Columbia sweep in the event with Stevens in second place at 1:52.43 and Jack Foster in third place at 1:54.43.

In the 100 freestyle, Kevin Frifeldt added first-place points behind a winning-time of 45.83, followed by a runner-up showing in the 100 butterfly at 49.90 with Terry Li taking the win at 48.89. The Lions capped the day with a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay as the squad of Li, Bondarenko, Kevin Dang and Mark Gullickcombined for a time of 3:06.94.

Up next, the Lions will return to Uris Pool on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 12 p.m. as they host Brown in their final home conference meet of the season.

PRESS RELEASE – COLUMBIA WOMEN

Ithaca, N.Y. – Victories in five events highlighted the Columbia women’s swimming & diving team trip to Ithaca on Saturday, Jan. 14 with Cornell taking the meet 162.5-137.5. The Lions picked up their first triumph of the afternoon in the 200 medley relay as the squad of Mary Ashby, Jennifer Shahar, Julia Samson and Alice Boutant clocked in with a time of 1:44.72.

Nicole Papsco put together a first-place performance in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:23.60, edging teammate Helen Wojdylo who posted a runner-up time of 2:24.97. Trudi Patrick gave the Lions its first butterfly victory of the season with a winning time of 56.88 in the 100 butterfly, while Jessica Antiles earned her third individual medley victory in Ivy League play with a time of 2:05.04 in the 200 I.M.

On the boards Brooke Bernardin led all divers in the one-meter dive with a top score of 261.30, followed by Kim Yang in second place with a tally of 250.11.

The Lions also added a few strong runner-up performances on the day, including Antiles in 200 freestyle at 1:54.16, Lisa Zhang in the 100 backstroke at 57.69, Jennifer Shahar in the 100 breaststroke at 1:04.34, Patrik in the 200 butterfly at 2:07.61, Mary Ashby in the 50 freestyle at 24.05, Alice Boutant in the 100 freestyle at 52.85 and the squad of Ashby, Kathleen O’Rourke, Boutant, and Shahar in the 400 medley relay at 3:31.31.

Up next, Columbia will host Brown on Friday Jan. 20 at 5 p.m. in the Lions final dual-meet at Uris Pool this season.

PRESS RELEASE – CORNELL WOMEN

ITHACA, N.Y. — The Cornell seniors closed their home career with a bang as the Big Red women’s swimming and diving team topped Columbia 162.5-137.5 on Saturday afternoon at Teagle Pool to improve to 3-5 (2-3 Ivy) on the season.

The Big Red, which had lost 16 straight to the Lions prior to its 2015 dual meet win at home, won 10-of-14 swimming events and 11 events overall in picking up its second Ivy victory of the year.

Kimmy Vitek (283.27) edged out teammate Jackie Real (281.48) to lead a 1-2-3-4 Big Red sweep in the three-meter event and Real was the top finisher for Cornell on the 1-meter springboard in third (245.47).

The Lions got off to a good start with a win in the 200 medley relay, but it was all Big Red from there on. Currie Murch Elliot (10:22.11) led a 1-2-3 Big Red sweep in the 1,000 free and twin sister Billy touched first in the 100 free (1:04.20). Hannah Bollinger won the 200 free (1:52.89), Helen Hsu topped the field in the 100 back (57.08) and Jordan Silbert touched first in the 200 fly (2:04.32), all by comfortable margins.

Ellie Belilos won a pair of races, capturing both the 50 (23.94) and 100 free (52.31) and Tessa Wilson‘s 2:04.60 won the 200 back. Rounding out the individual winners was Micaela Luders in the 500 free (5:03.65), while Hsu, Cari Stankaitis, Belilos and Sarah Baturka took first in the 400 free relay to cap the winning weekend.

Cornell will visit St. Bonaventure for its final non-conference dual meet on Friday, Jan. 20 beginning with diving at 12:30 p.m. and continuing with 3:30 p.m. swimming.

ITHACA, N.Y. — Cornell won five individual events and set a pool record in the 200 medley relay, but Columbia’s superior depth on the day allowed the Lions to capture a 175.5-124.6 victory over the Big Red men’s swimming and diving team on Sunday afternoon at Teagle Pool. The Big Red fell to 1-4 (1-4 Ivy) with the loss.

Cornell opened the swimming portion of the meet by setting a pool record to win the 200 medley relay, with Luke Reisch, Alex Evdokimov, Jack Brenneman and Jack Mahoney touching in 1:30.33 – nearly 0.7 ahead of Columbia’s runner-up squad and more than half-second faster than the previous record.

Evdokimov went 55.52 in the 100 breast to easily top teammate Ryan Brown (56.77) to stand atop the podium. He also won the 200 breast by more than a second with a time of 2:03.12.

Brenneman, who followed Evdokimov in the medley relay, captured the 50 free (20.51). Vincent Declercq won both the 100 fly in 1:51.24 and the 200 IM (1:55.74).
