14-year-old Claire Weinstein of Sandpipers of Nevada (SAND) tied the 13-14 girls National Age Group Record in the LCM 200 freestyle on Sunday, January 16th swimming to a time of 1:58.53.

The record is one of the oldest records still standing for the 13-14 girls LCM. The record was previously held solely by Sippy Woodhead who swam a time of 1:58.53 back in 1978. Woodhead also holds the 400 freestyle LCM record for 13-14 girls in a time of 4:07.15. Both the 200 and 400 freestyle records by Woodhead are the oldest for the 13-14 girls LCM.

Claire Tuggle has previously come closest to breaking the record, swimming a time of 1:58.58 at the 2018 Junior Pan Pac Championships. Over the summer, Weinstein was also close to breaking the record as she led off the 800 freestyle relay in a time of 1:58.95 at the Senior Mets Summer Long Course Championships held in July 2021.

Comparative Splits:

2022 2021 2021
Weinstein – New PB Weinstein – Old PB
50m 28.54 28.19 28.25
100m 30.07 (58.61) 30.08 (58.27) 30.34 (58.59)
150m 30.28 30.41 30.15
200m 29.64 (59.92) 30.27 (60.68) 30.11 (60.26)
Final Time 1:58.53 1:58.95 1:58.85

In the yards-course prelims, Weinstein swam 1:48.09 in the 200 free, which was more than three seconds slower than her personal best. Weinstein also swam the 800 free (8:32.51 in meters), 100 free (50.61 yards/56.50 meters), 200 back (2:02.57 yards/2:18.35 meters), 400/500 free (4:12.34 meters /4:45.85 yards), 200 IM (2:04.38 yards/2:21.36 meters), and 50 free (23.55 yards/27.23 meters).

Weinstein was a member of Westchester Aquatic Club out of New Rochelle, New York through this summer and has now made the move across the country to SAND. SAND has had great success with distance freestylers lately sending Katie Grimes, Bella Sims, and Erica Sullivan to the 2020 Olympics representing the United States.

Woodhead is a juggernaut of American swimming history. She was the 1984 Olympic silver medalist in the 200 free, having missed her shot at a peak Olympics in 1980 due to the U.S. boycott of the Games.

What’s the difference between this article and a tasty treat?

A Claire was destined to break this record while eclaire is a delicious dessert!

I’ll show myself out.

Yes and without doping noone at that time would have been able to break it -> Conclusion = Woodhead was clean?

of course you were! The US swimmers were clean and it was so clear that the East Germans were not..unbelievable that they were allowed to swim. In 1978 I was in high school and just getting into swimming, I swam with Tony Corbisiero and was devastated when you did not go to the olympics.. At 60 I am still swimming and still a fan of yours.. swim on!

Let’s see, 43 years ago I would have been mourning my Nana’s recent death, helping my parents care for my young sister, rooting for someone to deny the Steelers in the playoffs (didn’t happen), and looking forward to Spectacular Bid’s three year old campaign. Those were the years in which freak thoroughbreds emerged late as 2 year olds and carried over through the classics.

Was the 4.45 for the 500y free?

This is an impressive time for a 14-year-old. But it also highlights how incredibly talented Canada’s Summer McIntosh is. Summer swam a 1:55.74 lead-off on Canada’s 4×200 free relay in Tokyo at the age of 14.

imagine an Olympic relay where 3/4 of the members are age group swimmers from the same club
