Claire Curzan Swims 1:00.44 100 Back; 8th Fastest All-Time 15-16 Girls

2019 U.S. NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

15-Year-Old Claire Curzan posted a lifetime best in this morning’s prelims of the 100 back at US Nationals. Curzan finished 2nd overall in the heats with her time of 1:00.44, taking .59 seconds off her previous best time and cracking 1:01 for the first time in her career.

Curzan’s previous best was from June of this year. This morning, Curzan was out quick, flipping in 29.23. She broguht it home in 31.21, actually touching behind Scottish swimmer Kathleen Dwason, who was disqualified for a 15-meter violation. Unfortunately, we could not find Curzan’s splits from her previous best time (1:01.03) from the 2019 NC TAC TYR Triangle Class meet in June, so we can’t do a split comparison.

Curzan’s time now makes her the 8th fastest performer of all-time in the 15-16 age group. She bumped University of Texas’ Grace Ariola out of the #8 ranking. Regan Smith, the current World Record holder at 57.57, holds the 15-16 NAG at 58.83 from last Summer. Here is the current all-time top 10 for 15-16 girls:

  1. Regan Smith (2018) – 58.83
  2. Phoebe Bacon (2018) – 59.12
  3. Missy Franklin (2011) – 59.18

  9. Grace Ariola (2016) – 1:00.49

She has a good chance for the 100 fly in 2020, but the backstroke may have to wait a few years.
