CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati swimming and diving captured a big sweep of Denison on Saturday afternoon in the first home meet of the season.

The women won 226.5 to 73.50 while the men won 227-72.

The Bearcats swept nine individual events: women’s 200 free, men’s 200 free, men’s 100 back, women’s 200 fly, women’s 50 free, women’s 100 free, men’s 100 free, women’s 400 IM and men’s 400 IM and all four diving events. Denison won just one event on the day.

CINCINNATI, Ohio – Denison men’s swimming and diving fell to the University of Cincinnati by a final of 227-72 on Saturday afternoon at the Keating Aquatic Center.

The Big Red logged 13, top-three finishes on Saturday, including four, second-place finishes. Denison’s first of the day came in the 200 butterfly when senior Mitch Williams clocked in at 1:52.49 to finish second overall. Junior John Stauffer followed in third place at 1:54.10. The combo also finished top-five in the 400 IM with Stauffer taking fourth place (4:08.26) and Williams rounding out in fifth (4:11.03).

In the 200 backstroke, Bebe Wang logged a second-place finish at 1:51.98 with Sam Jo earning a spot in third place at 1:53.87. Sophomore Noah Houskeeper also claimed second place for DU in the 100 fly after logging a final time of 50.99. Fellow sophomore Ethan Bevill finished fourth overall at 51.65.

In the final event of the day, the quartet of Drake Horton, Trey Ike, Eric Gerlach, and Liam Picozzi rounded out Denison’s second-place finishes in the 200 free relay on a final mark of 1:25.03. Ike and Horton also teamed up with Richie Kurlich and Matt McHugh in the 200 medley relay to take third overall at 1:34.78.

In the second event of the day, Dayen Wilson paced the Big Red in the 1,000 freestyle in third place after logging a 9:47.18. James Baker trailed by less than four seconds in fourth place at 9:51.01. Baker also took third place in the 500 free after clocking in at 4:47.99 while Lukas Gately followed in fifth (4:51.14).

Kurlich finished his day with a trio of top-threes, including third place in the 100 (58.43) and 200 (2:06.34) breaststroke. Fellow sophomore Piotr Kurleto followed in both events, taking fourth in the 200 (2:12.95) and fifth in the 100 (1:00.34).

Ike also placed third overall in the 50 freestyle after logging a final time of 21.67. Kyle Verstandig followed by .05 seconds in fourth place (21.72). Horton claimed a pair of top-five finishes in the 100 (5th – 47.55) and 200 (4th – 1:43.77) free with PJ Desmet taking fourth in the 100 (47.52).

In the diving events, Brendan Downey led DU in the three-meter dive in third place with a total score of 233.55. In the one-meter, Liam Simmons finished in fourth at 213.40 and Downey took fifth (189.15).

Despite garnering nine finishes in the top-three, Denison women’s swimming and diving suffered a 226.50-73.50 loss to the University of Cincinnati on Saturday afternoon at the Keating Aquatic Center.

Senior KT Kustritz tallied Denison’s lone victory of the afternoon in the 100 breaststroke when she clocked in with an NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 1:04.40. Fellow senior Kate Mesaros followed in fourth place at 1:07.15. Kustritz also competed in the 200 breaststroke where she logged a third-place finish with a final time of 2:24.72.

In the opening event of the day, Kustritz teamed up with Casey Kirby, Maddie Hopkins, and Gabriella Nutter in the 200 medley relay to place second overall after touching the wall in 1:46.11. The group also competed in the 200 free relay and finished in second place again with a 1:37.17.

In the 100 butterfly, Hopkins paced DU in second place at 58.04. Zoe Whelan took fourth place on a final mark of 59.51. Hopkins also took part in the 50 free event where she sprinted her way to a 24.46 in fourth place. Nutter trailed by .31 seconds in sixth place (24.77). She also led DU in the 100 freestyle in fifth place after clocking in at 53.91. Michaela Morrison followed in sixth at 54.33.

Freshman Keely Tierney added to DU’s top-three finishes in the 1,000 freestyle when she placed third overall on a final time of 10:47.16. Sophomore Grace Kacmarek touched the wall at 10:54.77 to finish in fourth. Fellow first-year Tara Culibrk claimed a third-place finish in the 500 free behind a time of 5:12.18. Tierney followed in fourth at 5:19.47. Culibrk also took fourth in the 200 free at 1:55.33, ahead of teammate Logan Wickman in sixth on a final mark of 1:57.96.

Kirby took home a top-three finish in the 100 backstroke following a time of 59.69 in third place. Laine Newman finished in fifth place at 1:00.95. Bridget Horton led the Big Red in the 200 back after checking in at 2:09.75 in third place.

In the 400 IM, Natalie Zaravella clocked in at 4:39.06 to finish in fourth while Savannah Sargent took sixth place at 4:42.92.

In the diving events, senior Naomi Clayton highlighted Denison’s efforts in the one and three-meter dives. In the one-meter, Clayton logged a six-dive score of 234.90 to finish in fifth place. Mattie Stauss followed in seventh place on a final total of 208.05. Clayton finished in sixth place in the three-meter dive with a score of 225.85 while Stauss added another seventh-place finish at 210.95.

The Big Red will return to the pool next Friday, Nov. 1 when they travel to NCAC-rival Kenyon College for a 6 p.m. start.
