Cincinnati Kicks off 2015-16 with Red & Black Intrasquad

The men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams at the University of Cincinnati started the season off with some friendly in-house competition. They competed in the annual Red & Black Intrasquad this past Friday to set a foundation for 2015-16.

On the women’s side, junior Jacqueline Kiere kicked off this season with 4 intrasquad wins. First, she won all 3 of her freestyle events, claiming the 200 in 1:58.35, the 50 in 23.66, and the 100 in 53.66. She then showed some versatility by clocking a 59.79 to take the win in the 100 IM. Last season, she went on to become Cincinnati’s first female All-American in 10 years thanks to her top 16 finish in the 200 free at the 2015 NCAA Championships.

Freshman Pakawadee Sopapong showed she was able to hang with the upperclassmen in her first college meet. She took the win in the 200 breast with a 2:23.91. She also picked up 2nd place finishes in the 100 breast (1:08.04) and 100 IM (1:01.61).

Lindsey Niehaus grabbed wins in the 100 back and 200 back with a 58.50 and 2:10.45. She also put up an impressive performance in the 50 freestyle, where she took 2nd in 24.53. That’s under a half second away from her season best 24.04 she posted last year.

Also making a sweep, Fedoreeva Iuliia won both of the fly events. She raced to victory in the 200 fly with a 2:11.80. She then sealed her 100 fly win with a 59.50.

On the men’s side, Christopher Bready captured the middle distance freestyle events with a 1:44.02 in the 200 and a 4:37.86 in the 500. Joining him with double wins was Ryan DePietro in the fly events. He posted a 51.44 in the 100 and a 1:54.33 in the 200.

The men’s 50 free was one of the most exciting races of the meet, as Alexander Hutchinson and Nicholas Lafleur were separated by just 0.01. In the end, it was Hutchinson who got his hand on the wall first. He posted a 21.56 to Lafleur’s 21.57.

Ludovico Corsini, a transfer from Mars Hill, picked up his first win for the Bearcats with a 57.95 in the 100 breast. Behind him was Tyler Roehr in 58.13. Roehr then went on to win the 200 breast in 2:09.82.

The Bearcats will resume competition on October 1st with an away meet against the University of Indiana Hoosiers.
