Absolutely torching the 400 IM field in the Pan Am Games A final tonight, Team USA’s Charlie Swanson clocked a time of 4:11.46 for the dominant gold medal win. The performance makes him the seventh-best American of all time in this event.

Swanson came into this meet with a 4:14.01, a time registered at the 2018 US Nationals which helped him qualify for this meet. He was 4:16.66 this morning, shutting things down over the back half, while his time tonight gave him a huge victory over the next-best competitor, Leonardo Santos of Brazil (4:19.41). No other swimmer was under 4:20 in this event.
At the 2019 NCAA Championships, Swanson missed finals with a 3:43.61 in the 400y IM. That is his eighth-best performance, ever, and is more than four seconds off of his lifetime best of 3:39.18 from 2018. Tonight, though, he looks like he’s very much so back on track as he approaches the 4:10 barrier.
Swanson checks in at #7 in American history, just behind Erik Vendt‘s 4:11.27 from 2002 and ahead of Gunnar Bentz‘s 4:11.66 from 2017. Bentz is in Lima with Team USA and was supposed to be racing in this 400 IM today, but he fell ill and scratched the event’s prelims this morning.
This season, which is nearly over, Swanson sneaks into the world’s top 5 at #4, and #2 amongst Americans behind only Jay Litherland‘s silver medal-winning time from the 2019 World Championships.

There goes MA’s chances in the 400 IM…..
USRPT doesn’t go that far
Of course it does; it’s just a matter of focus. Name another world class 50/100 swimmer who goes up to 400 or vice versa. Should point out that MA broke the NAG in the 400 IM and all the 200 strokes (except maybe breaststroke, not sure) and swam them all with impeccable splits. Mastering any 200 usually takes many years, so I’d say that’s evidence that USRPT is an extremely effective training method.
