The Missouri Tigers posted a dominant victory over in-state rival Missouri State in a home dual meet on Saturday. There were 4 Tigers who won multiple individual races, including Michael Chadwick, Andrew Sansoucie, Hannah Stevens, and Erin Metzger-Seymour.
Chadwick, a senior, took on the 100 breast/100 free double. He earned his first victory in the 100 breast, posting a 54.50 to outswim teammate Jordy Groters (55.80). Chadwick stepped up to the plate again for the 100 free. He blazed to a 20.81 split at the 50 en route to his winning time of 43.26. That put him over 2.5 seconds ahead of anyone else in the field, as teammate Mikel Schreuders was 2nd in 45.88.
On the women’s side, Missouri’s Stevens and Nadine Laemmler put up a highlight swim in the 200 back. The two Tigers were neck-and-neck down the stretch, with Stevens coming home a touch faster to win it in 1:58.81 to Laemmler’s 1:59.06. Stevens also won the 50 free earlier in the session in 23.83.

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The No. 15/13 Mizzou men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams made it two sweeps in as many days as the Tigers earned dual meet wins over Missouri State on Saturday afternoon at the Mizzou Aquatic Center. The men’s team notched a 177-109 win over the Bears, while the women’s program was victorious 182-97.
Six different Tigers earned double wins on the day, including a Mizzou sweep in the diving well. Redshirt senior Lauren Reedy (Rochester Hills, Michigan) took home the women’s 1-meter (331.28) and 3-meter (360.00) crowns, while sophomore Kyle Goodwin (Aurora, Colorado) earns wins on men’s 1-meter (personal best 377.10) and 3-meter (395.33).
Seniors Michael Chadwick (Charlotte, North Caorlina) and Andrew Sansoucie (Wentzville, Missouri) each claimed a pair of wins in the pool, with Chadwick earning the 100 free (43.26) and 100 breast (54.50) titles, and Sansoucie won the 100 fly (46.86) and tied sophomore Luke Mankus (Keller, Texas) for the 50 free (20.63) victory.
Also double winners were juniors Erin Metzger-Seymour (Westminster, Colorado) and Hannah Stevens (Lexington, Ohio). Seymour earned top honors in both the 200 free (1:50.59) and 100 fly (55.06), while Stevens claimed wins in the 50 free (23.83) and 200 back (1:58.81).
Missouri opened the meet with first-place finishes in both the men’s and women’s 200 medley relays. The Tiger men’s A team of senior Carter Griffin (Parker, Colorado), senior Fabian Schwingenschlogl (Nuremberg, Germany), Sansoucie and Chadwick touched first in 1:28.30, while the women’s foursome of senior Nadine Laemmler (Wackersdorf, Germany), senior Katharine Ross (Des Moines, Iowa), sophomore Maddie Gehrke (Clive, Iowa) and senior Victoria Trost (Johnston, Iowa) won in 1:43.16.
Other Tiger winners on the day included Griffin in the men’s 200 back, freshman Daniel Hein (Sycamore, Illinois) in the men’s 100 back, freshman Giovanny Lima (Sao Paulo, Brazil) in the 200 free, Ross in the women’s 100 breast, junior Kira Zubar (Chaska, Minnesota) in the 1000 free, sophomore Courtney Evensen (Golden Valley, Minnesota) in the 500 free, freshman Azra Avdic (Skokie, Illinois) in the 200 fly and freshman Haley Hynes (Lee’s Summit, Missouri) in the 100 back.
Additionally, junior Sharli Brady (Burlington, Kentucky) and freshman Nick Alexander (Crestwood, Missouri) notched top times in the 400 IM races but swam in exhibition.
The Tiger swimmers return to the pool for the two-day Tiger Invite, Friday, Jan. 27-Saturday, Jan. 28, at the Mizzou Aquatic Center.

COLUMBIA, Mo. – In its final dual meet of the 2016-17 season, the Missouri State swimming and diving team fell to the No. 15/13 Missouri men’s and women’s swimming and diving club at the Mizzou Aquatic Center, Saturday afternoon. The Missouri State men fell by a score of 177-109 while the women lost 182-97.
Five Bears – Antonio Thomas, Minki Kang, Artur Osvath, Loretta Stelnicki and Lauren Pavel – earned first-place victories during the matchup between the in-state rivals. The Bears controlled the 200-yard breaststroke as Pavel touched the wall first in 2:21.72 and Osvath earned a first-place finish with a time of 1:58.36.
“We had a tough start with the medley relays, but I think we did a good job with responding and racing tough at our second meet in three days,” Osvath said. “I’m proud of this team for battling until the end and I think we are poised for a great conference meet.”
Osvath went on to win the 200yd fly (1:47.04) as well, while Kang and Thomas earned their crowns in the distance free events. Thomas was the champion in the men’s 500yd free, finishing the race in 4:31.15 and Kang reached the wall first in the 1000yd free (9:19.32).
“It is always a challenge swimming against the University of Missouri, but I feel like we came out and competed well with them,” Kang said. “I am excited to see how we finish out the season.”
On the women’s side, Stelnicki dominated the 100yd free, finishing in 52.39 seconds. Placing fifth in the 200yd free, the sophomore shaved nearly three seconds off her season best time after finishing the race in 1:54.31.
“It was fun to finish out the regular dual meet season racing against a good opponent,” Stelnicki said. “The racing was challenging, but it was great to see everyone get behind each other and cheer for one another. We are very excited for the conference championships in a few weeks. We have been training very hard and I’m excited to see everyone’s hard work pay off soon.”
Up next for the Bears
After completing the final dual meet of the season, the Missouri State men head east to South Bend, Ind., to compete in the Shamrock Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame on Jan. 27-28. The Missouri State women return to action at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships, held in Iowa City, Iowa, on Feb. 15-18. Why so few entries in the distance events? Is it because of the time of season or are they both low on distance swimmers. There was only one girl in the 1000 and 3 boys. And then only 2 girls in the 500
Nah – the distance group just isn’t a big strength at Missouri right now. They’ve only had 2 guys swim the 1000 all year. On the women’s side, Kira Zubar is solid (4:40.40 and 16:03.37 at the Mizzou Invite), but she’s their only true threat in the distance races.
The mile might be MSU’s best chance to get an NCAA qualifier – Thomas was 15:04 at midseason and it usually doesn’t take much under 15 to make the meet.
And yeah… Mizzou hasn’t really been a distance oriented program recently. Nick Davis has really progressed well (47.1/1:42/4:38/16:42 out of high school to 44.4/1:35/4:17/15:09 bests now) and will have a chance to make the big show this year, but they don’t have anything after him. (Interesting side note, just looked at their last good distance swimmer Eegan Groome’s career bests and by somewhat eerie coincidence they are 1:35/4:17/15:09 also 😛 )
Rhodenbaugh’s habbit of giving up on swimmers early on shows when Mizzou has no depth in an event.
New 200 freestyler and Hein is starting to get on a little of a roll – good things for Mizzou relays.
46.8 100 fly for Sansoucie and 19.0 relay split for Chadwick are pretty wicked this time of year too.
