Cerritos Girls 4-Peat, Boys 3-Peat at CIF-SS Division IV Finals

2016 California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section Swimming & Diving Championships

Cerritos won both the girls’ and the boys’ titles at the 2016 CIF-Southern Section Division IV (smaller schools) Championships on Friday night; it was the fourth consecutive win for the girls and the third for the boys. Although they had no individual event winners, Cerritos had the depth in both the girls’ and boys’ squads to outscore their opponents.

Cerritos opened and closed the girls’ meet with big relay wins. In the 200 medley relay, Arina Yu (28.53), Maya Valdoria (30.64), Breanna Rigor (26.64), and Megan Ma (24.76) combined for 1:50.57, beating the field by 10 seconds. The same foursome won the 400 free relay (Yu-55.01, Valdoria-55.23, Ma-54.45, and Rigor-53.93) with 3:38.62, over 5 seconds faster than second-place Rowland.

Rowland freshman Katelyn Nguyen dropped 5 seconds from her prelims time and won the 200 free in 1:53.13, taking it out quickly and never giving top-seeded Mia Bailey of Alta Loma a chance. Bailey finished second with 1:55.37. Nguyen doubled with a win in the 50 free as well. Her 23.85 was 6/10 better than her prelims time, and 4/10 faster than second-place Victoria Kirshner of Santa Clarita Christian (24.28). Kirshner, meanwhile, won the 100 free in 52.43 over Lezly Plahn of Foothill Technology (53.44) and Alta Loma’s Bailey (53.49).

Vistamar sophomore Keiko Derikoletis was a double event winner by significant margins. She clocked a 5:13.39 in the 500 free to win by more than 9 seconds, then a 57.02 in the 100 fly, beating Valdoria (59.16) and Saskia Wong-Smith of Archer School (59.68) by two body lengths.

La Salle’s Jacqueline Torrez defended her 100 breast title with 1:05.44 over Valdoria (1:06.79) and placed second in the 200 IM (2:07.67) behind Maranatha’s Summer Otazu (2:06.36). Otazu also won the 100 back (55.78).

Rowland won the 200 free relay with 1:40.27, narrowly missing the division record. Melinda Wang (25.80), Meghan Chang (25.94), Allison Nguyen (25.10) and Katelyn Nguyen (23.43) contributed to the effort.

Sophomore Michelle Lee of Fairmont scored 443.15 points in the one-meter diving final to put the first points on the board. Whittier Christian freshman Sidney Wright was second (335.60) and Maranatha junior Sabina Lewis, third (333.00).

Boys’ Meet

Four boys dominated the individual events, winning two individual titles each. Beaumont junior Paul Goetz not only won the 50 and 100 freestyles, but he also set the division record in the 50. Goetz scorched the field, touching in 20.90 to take a .05 chunk out of the previous mark. Tobias Hynes of Grace Brethren (21.50) and Elikai Crompton of West Valley (21.73) were second and third. Goetz went 46.83 to win the 100; Hynes was runner-up again, this time with 47.22.

Fairmont senior Edgar Chin claimed firsts in the 200 IM and 100 breast. Chin crushed the meet record in the latter event, putting up a speedy 54.89 and taking .83 off the mark he had set in prelims with 55.72. Cody Kewley of Quartz Hill was second with 59.04. In the 200 IM, Chin was in sixth place after backstroke but outsplit the field by a huge margin to take over the lead by about 3 seconds going into the freestyle. Although he didn’t have the fastest final 50 he hung on to win by 2.8 seconds, touching in 1:57.72. Runner-up was Derek Chen of La Salle (2:00.59).

Another Fairmont senior, Evan Munaretto, doubled in the 200 free and 500 free. His 1:40.29 in the 200 put him 3.5 seconds ahead of second-place Dominic Falcon of Ocean View (1:43.81). The two finished in the same order in the 500 free but this time it was a 9.7-second difference; Munaretto won with 4:36.86 while Falcon went 4:46.23.

La Salle sophomore James Torrez won both 100 fly and 100 back. He went 51.13 to beat teammate Chen by 1.30 in the fly, then destroyed the field in the back, touching in 50.23 ahead of Foothill Tech junior Josh Modglin (53.58) and Eric Working of Cerritos (54.82).

Notre Dame (Riverside) won the medley relay in 1:39.82 with Aidan Mojica, Roman Sarmiento, Alonzo Javier, and Nicholas Diaz. The 400 free relay went to Beaumont (Cory Smith, Ethan Peterson, Mark Perez, and Goetz)in 3:14.40 over San Dimas (3:15.58).

The most exciting event of the meet was the 200 free relay, in which San Dimas (James Hull, Seth Ireland, Jared Caldarone, and Robbie Simpson) combined for 1:30.03 to touch out Quartz Hill (1:30.22), Notre Dame (1:30.33), and Cerritos (1:30.46).

Yes Cerritos has a great swim team but it’s time for them to move up and out a division 4. Along with Maranatha and Rowland High, these schools dominate their leagues year after year. It’s time for them to give their summer is a real challenge.
