CBDA Takes Safe Route, Will Host 2015 Maria Lenk Meet at Fluminese

Despite speculation that the Maria Lenk Aquatic Center would be completed with its pre-Olympic facelift in time to host this year’s Maria Lenk Trophy, the CBDA (Brazilian Swimming Federation) has released full meet notes and will hold the event instead at Fluminense.

Progress on Maria Lenk, which will host the water polo and diving competitions at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, is moving rapidly, but there is concern that the roads around the facility won’t be ready in time for the April 6th-11th National Championship meet.

Maria Lenk is a much bigger stadium, seating about 8,000 people, but Fluminense is still big enough to hold the expected crowd for the meet. This will make the middle of three straight years where this meet won’t be held at the pool named for the same patron as the meet. Last year, the meet was held at Ibirapuera in Sao Paulo, and next year will be the Olympic test event, held in the new Olympic Aquatics Stadium.

Fluminense is the annual host of another major Brazilian meet, Julio Delamare.
