Catching Air: Dynamic Squat Jumps

All sports have at least one thing in common, you have to breath. Larry Arnold is teaching the high school swimmers at Phoenix Swim Club how to use their breath to carry them through different exercises. In this short clip he explains how the diaphragm is used in 2 types of breath. The kind when you’re blowing out candles and the kind when you’re fogging up a window or mirror. This is a warm up exercise but the kids looked sharp enough that I will give them dynamic credit. In 6 months working with Larry, I’ve found that those swimmers who are able to carry a breathing rhythm in the water have a much better time finding easy speed in the early parts of the race and enough air for quality finishing speed at the end of races. Simple exercise aimed at letting the breath set the rhythm of an exercise.
