Oct 26, 2013

Pittsburgh – On Saturday, the Tartans of Carnegie Mellon University faced off against Case Western Reserve University’s Spartans. CMU triumphed on both sides, taking the women’s meet 191-101 and the men’s meet 178-108 after swimming the final few events as exhibition.

The Tartan cast was led on the women’s side by senior Soleil Phan and freshman Kimberly Klausing. Phan won the 100 freestyle (54.98) and touched first in the 200 individual medley (2:13.59), as well as contributing to the fastest 200 freestyle relay with a solid anchor leg. The latter two, while the fastest recorded times at the meet were swum as exhibition. Klausing took home victory in the 1000 freestyle by 24 seconds, touching at 10:51.86. Later in the meet, she also captured the 500 freestyle in 5:16.43.

The 200 freestyle went to Case’s Sara Tillie in 1:58.85. She was the only woman under two minutes at the meet, and won by over two full seconds.

CMU was back on top with the 100 backstroke, taking the top three spots, led by Kira Singhaus in a time of 1:00.47. Felicia Wang of CMU led the sweep of the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.39.

Case struck back with an NCAA “B” cut time in the 200 butterfly, courtesy of Maggie Dillone. Dillone touched in at 2:08.57 to win the event by a runaway five seconds.

CMU dominated the next six events, going 1-2-3 in two of them. Lauren Zemering captured the 50 freestyle in 25.38. Machika Kaku took the women’s 1 meter diving event with 226.80 points, followed by two CMU teammates. After Phan’s victorious 100 freestyle came the CMU sweep of the 200 backstroke, led by Marisa Giglio in 2:212.36. Teammate Natalie Kronfli took the 200 breaststroke (2:30.78) and then came Klausing’s win in the 500.

Dillone made a case for Case in the 100 butterfly, but even her 57.83 – good for first place – wasn’t enough to rally the troops.

Winona Li led the CMU divers to a sweep of the 3 meter, finishing with a point total of 240.90, and for the rest of the meet, CMU competed as exhibition.

On the men’s side, CMU was led by freshman Evan Li who touched first in each of the four events he competed in throughout the course of the meet. He swam the opening leg on the victorious 200 medley relay (1:35.99), dominated in the 200 freestyle (1:44.27), won the 200 backstroke (1:56.86), and the lead off of the exhibition 200 freestyle relay (1:26.96).

Case’s Aaron Tam got things started well with a victory in the 1000 freestyle, touching in at 9:50.68. That time puts him at the top of the list of fastest times swum so far this season in that event, two seconds ahead of CMU’s Andrew Yee.

CMU rallied immediately afterwards to sweep the 100 backstroke, touching 1-2-3, led by Alexander Dintino in 53.82.

Sean Nickley swam a 59.63 in the 100 breaststroke, good for another first for Case as they continued to fight back.

However, CMU’s depth continued to show. They swept the top three spots in the 200 butterfly immediately afterward, and picked up an event win in the 50 freestyle. David Campbell led the charge in the butterfly, finishing with a 1:55.43, while Eddie Sears claimed the freestyle gold in a time of 21.51.

Not to be deterred, Case rallied again. Diver Daniel Jacobson obliterated the competition on the 1 meter board, taking the win with 300.75 points. Eric Haufler touched in first in the 100 freestyle immediately afterwards for the win in a time of 47.67.

The 200 backstroke coup was led by Li, and Roy Sung captured the 200 breaststroke in 2:12.29 right afterwards.

Case’s Tam made his way back on the scene for the 500, touching out CMU’s Yee by .02 to secure the win.

Brian Walsh of struck back in the 100 butterfly, winning in 52.27, followed by two teammates, as CMU secured the top three spots in the event.

Jacobson was back at it on the boards, taking the 3 meter in 303.60 before Case cinched the final relay going 1-2-3 because CMU had swum it as exhibition.

The final individual event of the men’s meet was the 200 individual medley which went to Jay Jin, who led the top three of CMU in a time of 1:59.55. The top three were within .2 of each other.
