THURSDAY FINALS HEAT SHEET

WOMEN’S 100 BUTTERFLY — FINALS

Top 3:

  1. Alex Shackell (Carmel), 59.61
  2. Leah Gingrich (Columbus), 59.72
  3. Gigi Johnson (SwimAtlanta), 59.91

It was 14-year-old Alex Shackell of Carmel Swim Club who emerged victorious in the women’s 100 fly in Greensboro. Shackell began to pull away at the start of the 2nd 50, but Leah Gingrich and Gigi Johnson closed into the finish. In a very tight finish, Shackell touched the wall 0.11 seconds ahead of Gingrich, and 0.30 seconds ahead of Johnson.

The swim was a lifetime best for Shackell, coming in well under her previous best of 1:00.34, which she swam in prelims. Prior to the meet, Shackell had a best of 1:00.63, which she swam in May of this year.

Here is a split comparison between Shackell’s prelims swim and her finals swim today:

Finals Prelims
50m 27.52 28.17
100m 32.09 32.17
Final Time 59.61 1:00.34

Notably, the biggest difference between Shackell’s prelims swim and her finals swim was the first 50, where she was out 0.65 seconds faster in finals. She also came home just a tick faster on the 2nd 50 than she did in prelims.

Shackell’s swim now makes her the #3 performer all-time for 13-14 girls, behind only NAG-record holder Claire Curzan, and Kendyl Stewart. Here is the current all-time top 10 for 13-14 girls in the LCM 100 fly:

Her arm speed is beyond impressive, especially at that age. Didn’t lose tempo from the first stroke to the finish. Congrats, Alex!
