The Port Macquarie pool was all abuzz this week when an elite swimming club from Sydney chose to do their summer swim camp at the pool where Michael Mullins trained Olympic swimmer James Magnussen.

Carlile Swimming’s Head Coach Justin Rothwell has made the trip north for the last 4 years as he finds the swimmers look forward to the great weather, relaxed lifestyle and happy town. It is also a sought after camp as only national qualifiers are eligible to be on the team.

Justin said Coach Mullins was very obliging in making pool time available to cope with the influx of extra swimmers.

The Hastings also benefits from the swim camp with the money spent from the group of 40 swimmers, coaches, managers and chaperones.

Staying 4 days in town at the Ki-ea Apartments for the girls and the Sandcastle Apartments for the boys which are all in walking distance to the pool, gave the swimmers who range from 12 to 18 a taste of what it feels like to travel as a team and possibly to set some goals for Nationals, World Champs and even the Olympics.

It wasn’t all hard grind twice a day at the pool as taking some time out was also on the agenda with movies at the Majestic Cinema and a trip on the jet boat which was definitely a highlight.

The swimmers and coaches are already talking about next year’s camp at Port Macquarie a sign that the trip was a great success.
