Canadian record holder Ryan Kelly will be taking the trek south of the border come September to train with the West Virginia University Mountaineers.

Kelly, who trains with Ajax Swimming in Ajax located east of Toronto, gave his verbal commitment to swim with the Mountaineers and start his journey in the NCAA program.

“I’m very excited to become a part of the West Virginia Mountaineers,” Kelly said. “The coaching staff, led by Vic Riggs, have the skills and personality for success. Both the coaches and I have the mutual feeling that their program is one that will continue to provide positive results for me for years to come.”

Although his experience in yards swimming is limited due to Canada running their short course season in meters, Kelly has plenty of experience in the long course pool.

Last season, Kelly competed at the Canadian Team Trials where he ended up qualifying for the consolation final in the 200m butterfly. There he rocked a 2:03.43 for a huge time-drop in order to place 15th overall.

Kelly’s season didn’t just end there as he and his team went on to swim at the Canadian National Championships in August. There, along with three of his teammates, Kelly broke a Canadian age group record in the 4x100m medley relay. Kelly swam the fly leg putting up a 56.51 fly split.

With so much success at Ajax, Kelly made sure to commit to a program that he felt had a similar environment.

“The atmosphere at WVU is similarly close-knit, which will make for an easy transition. I’m grateful for this opportunity and look forward being part of a great program.”

Looks like coach Bell is losing his better swimmers for the 2016-2017 season. Will be interesting to see if he is able to bring up new athletes…
