October 17th, 2016 Canada, International, News

Swimming Canada has released an updated roster for the 2016 World Short Course Championships. They initially announced their team in the middle of May, 7 months before the start of the meet. Considering that this is the first time that Canada has hosted the meet, their early release of the roster was sure to build anticipation among local swim fans.

After such a strong performance across the board from Canadian swimmers at the Rio Olympics, it’s looking good for them going into the World Short Course Championships. Most notably was 16 year old, Penny Oleksiak who became the most decorated Canadian Olympian at any summer games. Oleksiak will be returning for the World Short Course Championships, among many other Olympians.

Canada’s new roster includes 17 men, which is 10 more than they sent to the Olympics, and 17 women (2 less than were sent to the games).

Below are the names of the swimmers who were listed on the original roster, but are no longer going to the meet:

Here are the new additions to the roster that weren’t included on the original team:

  • Ivan Cocunubo
  • Sarah Darcel
  • Kelsey Wog

The meet will be hosted from December 6th-11tth at the WFCU Centre in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

How come Penny Oleksiak is listed to be with TSC and Billy O’toole…. Does she not train with Ben Titley and HPC Ontario right now?

Can Richard Funk?

Looks like college (NCAA or CCAA) isn’t keeping many swimmers from going. Should be an interesting meet.

what about Ryan Cochrane? Has he also retired? His reply after the 1500 free at the Olympics seemed a bit ambiguous.

Don’t think so, or at least not yet, but he did seem to take a break after Rio and I think he is currently on a club swim tour across Canada, so that would make it tough to put in enough training for the event which is only 2 months away.

Really? I have not seen anything online about that. Are you sure she just isn’t taking a break?

She is not the list of Sport Canada approved cards which is a pretty good indicator.
