California Native Joey Agena Commits to CSUB for 2021

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Originally from Santa Monica, California, Joey Agena recently made the move to Ohio where he attends Spire Institute and swims with the Lake Erie Silver Dolphins. In California, he trained with Alpha Aquatics. Agena has announced that he will be returning to California to spend his collegiate career, committing to swim at California State University, Bakersfield. Bakersfield is just over an hour and a half from Santa Monica.

“I’m extremely blessed to announce my commitment to the California State University, Bakersfield. I thank God every day for this opportunity to pursue swimming at the next level. I would also like to thank my parents, family, coaches, and teammates for their endless support throughout the years.”

Agena is primarily a breaststroker, with the ability to compete in the IM as well. At the Lake Erie Senior Championships in March, he was a finalist in both the 100 and 200 breast. His best finish was in the 100, where he touched 5th while notching a personal best time of 59.32. He also picked up an 8th place finish and best time of 2:09.90 in the 200 breast.

In the long course pool at the end of March, Agena notched a trio of lifetime bests in the 50 free (26.52), 100 breast (1:10.17), and 200 IM (2:21.12). Competing at the Sectionals meet in Elkhart, his top finish came in the 100 breast, where he touched in 27th.

Best SCY Times

  • 100 breast – 59.32
  • 200 breast – 2:09.90
  • 200 IM – 2:01.78

After opting out of competition for the 2020-21 season, CSUB’s last conference championship meet was in 2020 when the Roadrunner men took 6th out of 7 men’s teams at the 2020 Western Athletic Conference Championships. When the team returns to the pool this fall it will be a part of a new conference, as the program joined the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MSPF) last year.

While the program has since graduated it’s top breaststroker, Agena will have one year of overlap with Antonio Milin, who scored in the finals of both breaststroke races.

STOP COMMITTING HERE. ITS A TOXIC ENVIRONMENT LEAD BY A TOXIC HEAD COACH. HE IS VERBALLY ABUSIVE AND CARES LITTLE TO NOTHING ABOUT THE SWIMMERS. HE TAKES EVERYONES LOVE FOR THE SPORT AWAY AND BY THE TIME PEOPLE ARE SENIORS THEY CRY ON SENIOR DAY BECAUSE THEY HATED THE TIME THEY SPENT THEIR SO MUCH.

Gotta say that I would probably be one of the best persons to respond to this comment that I know of who frequent SwimSwam. Not sure exactly who this is or what year you were in, but Chris Hansen has has always been a coach who expects his athletes to work hard and give their all, but has also always placed the value of school over that of swimming.

Basically If you’re looking for a party school then don’t go here. If you’re looking to work hard in the pool and out then this might be a good fit for you.
