Saturday Prelims Heat Sheet

The final day of the 2021 PAC-12 Championships will go down to the wire in the team battle between Stanford and Cal. Currently, Stanford narrowly leads Cal by a score of 1091 to 1074.5. UCLA and USC are also in a battle for 3rd place. However, UCLA has the advantage on the final day, as there are no diving events and because the Bruins have 5 people entered in the 1650 freestyle to USC’s 0.

Team Scores

  1. Stanford, 1091
  2. Cal, 1074.5
  3. UCLA, 789
  4. USC, 732.5
  5. Utah, 657
  6. Arizona, 633
  7. Washington State, 355

Going into the final stretch, Cal holds more top seeds than Stanford with 3 of their swimmers coming in as the top-ranked seeds. However, Stanford holds 2 top seeds of their own and the team holds 1 additional mile entry over Cal that is guaranteed to score, as there are only 16 entries overall.

Cal is having an awesome year, but let’s not forget that Stanford stars Taylor Ruck and Reagan Smith are skipping this year for olympic training elsewhere, plus Covid is causing Normann to also skip this year. These three could have made a significant difference, but even without these three stars Stanford is leading after the first three days. Fear the Trees!

Stanford is without many star swimmers you mentioned, including Ruck, Smith, Lillie and Lucie Norman’s, and Samantha Pearson. This year has been a weird year. Can’t wait for post Olympic 2021 when every team will be complete.

I don’t feel that either team is geared toward trying to win conference. Cal will take it just because they have a bigger roster. Stanford is difficult to read. They haven’t had much in the way of break out swims just the same swimmers doing the same swims as previous years. Maybe they have more in the tank for March. They needed Goeders, Fackenthal or Wheal or someone to step up and become their go to anchor person for the relays. Also Huske and Tang coming in the fall so lookout.

I think every single women’s college swimming program does. They should. Stanford is so consistently good it makes it more special when Cal stands a change of beating them in a dual meet, conference or NCAAs. An off year like this one means Stanford is merely competitive instead of dominant. It’s really annoying tbh.
Go Bears!
