Caeleb Dressel Entered In Seven Events For US Olympic Trials

2016 U.S. OLYMPIC TRIALS

NCAA standout Caeleb Dressel has entered a whopping seven events for the upcoming US Olympic Trials, a staggering number but don’t expect him to swim all seven. Along with his two primary events – the 50 and 100 freestyle – Dressel has entered the 200 free, 100 back, 100 breast, 100 fly, and 200 IM.

In a press conference in early May Dressel and coach Gregg Troy sat down to discuss the Trials and Dressel’s potential event lineup. Troy raved about Dressel’s potential in the 100 fly, as he did finish 2nd in the event at the NCAA Championships. “The 100 fly would be a tremendous event for him. I think he could do tremendously well but it backs up with the 50 freestyle I believe, so we have a little bit of a problem there.” On day 7 the 100 fly and 50 free finals are only separated by the women’s 800 free, giving Dressel a problem. He may swim the 100 fly prelims to see where he’s at, but the 50 free certainly takes the top priority.

The 200 free is another interesting event for Dressel, as he set a best time earlier this month and would be in relay contention if he took a few seconds off of that. Troy also express extreme confidence in Dressel’s ability in that event. “I feel pretty certain that if he swum the 200 freestyle at the NCAA meet that he would’ve been outstanding. Probably every bit as good as the guys that won.”

His other three entries – the 100 back, 100 breast and 200 IM – are a little more out of left field. He did swim a decent amount of breaststroke this season on Florida’s medley relays, but his best of 1:02.26 is about three seconds away from being a serious contender. The 100 back and 100 breast interfere with the 200 free, and the 200 IM interferes with one of his premier events, the 100 free.

Dressel comes in as the #2 seed in the 50 free (21.53), the #4 seed in the 100 free (48.74), and the #15 seed in the 200 free (1:48.39). He is also seeded 20th in the 100 fly (52.96), 41st in the 100 breast (1:02.26), 76th in the 200 IM and 79th in the 100 back.

This guy is a true Olympic team, and Olympic medal contender; he’s not at Trials just to participate. Swimming the 100 Br is not a good idea; he could get injured, use up energy, etc., plus he has no chance of making the team. I predict that he’ll drop the 200 IM, 100 Br, and 100 Bk. He’ll probably wait to see how Phelps is swimming before deciding on the 100 FL.

I’ve always been impressed by how versatile dessel is considering he’s such a great sprinter. It’s unsual to see an American record holder in the 50 and 100 free swim breast stroke in the medly relay, plus crank out the 3rd fastest time ever in the 100 fly

I predict he will swim the 50/100/200 free and possibly the 100 fly. I do believe the 200 IM will become a focus event for him for the next Olympiad though.

id love to see that. He’s already world level in the free, and probably would be in the fly as well. He’s great in short course in the breast and made a 100 back cut so isnt all too bad at that either. Troy knows a thing or 2 about developing great IMers, And he seems to have atleast some pedigree over the 200 distance. Probably would give Bobo an aneurysm thogh

I hope that he swims the 200IM, so that Michael Andrew can give him a good whipping. Hopefully that will stop this silliness.

Troy has a history of entering his swimmers in EVERYTHING! So this isn’t surprising. Troy knows what Caleb can do and will swim him events he deems best!
